Looking to upgrade my ageing Vitoria Voyager Hypers on my Spesh AWOL. Unfortunately the rims I’m running are i25s so can’t really go narrower than 35, which is already pushing it. Seen the rolling resistance comparison site which rates the Marathon Supremes and Almotions at a similar level to the voyagers, but wondering if road specific as opposed to touring tyres might be faster?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'm on Ritchey Alpine JB WCS in 30, and they come in a 35 as well. Roll well and are pretty tough so far. Very much on the speed end of the gravel spectrum. Sadly the 35 WCS version doesn't come in skinwall, though...

The instant model that springs to minds for simply low rolling resistance is G1speed.

TBH, why do you care? You are not in a race or a time trial, a few watts of theoretical rolling resistance here or there is nothing.

Thanks for the responses but they both look like gravel tyres, was looking for a road oriented tyre.

@trailwagger I don’t want to get tyres that are slower than what I have. I can hardly see that as being unreasonable!

Always found the voyager hypers to roll fast enough, why not get some more?

Continental Sport Contacts, I'm sure they come in 35's. Slick and puncture proof, brilliant tyres.

GP5000 36. The 4 season is fantastic in 36c aswell. Rode it from London to Istanbul last summer - did lots of gravel with them as well and they held up reasonably well (watch for pinches)

I Hutchinson Overide Tubeless, fine them great for commuting/exploring, but enough grip for a bit of off road exploring. Also, surprisingly puncture resistant.

@officerfriendly Not saying it's unreasonable, just would not be top of my list of requirements on the type of bike you have. (I am making an assumption as to the type of riding you are doing). I would put comfort and durability higher up than rolling resistance if I was pootling around all day at 10mph

Rivendell (made by panaracer) Jack Brown Green. 33.5c Light, supple, tanwall. Inexpensive at PX/O-O

Should be fine on i25.

How on earth do you manage to put that into a sentence in such a way as it sounds like a positive?

Never got on with challenge tyres myself. Always seem very puncture prone and short on longevity.

Panaracer Gravel King, the slick version - they're even faster than the Voyager Hypers and go up to 700x42c! I swapped from 35c Hypers to these recently and my average speed is exactly the same, but even more comfortable.

Vittoria Terreno Zero?

The Terreno Dry is already pretty fast rolling in my experience (in a 40) and apparently Terreno 33s measure up as a 35. Pop up tubeless very easily also.

+1 Gravel King SKs tubeless - I have some 32s and been out riding with mates on their road bikes and virtually no difference in rolling speed even at 25mph. Quite tough too considering the rubbish roads and tracks I've taken them down.

Go all in and get some Schwalbe Big Apple. Admittedly the smallest they do is 2”, but you can ride over anything and they’re surprisingly quick.

Haven’t tried on a 29er but have Schwalbe Durano on my foot-bike, which is essentially a gravity-racer. It goes like stink on the Duranos and they’re tough too. Have standard Marathons on my tourer and the Duranos are much faster. Night and day.

*edit £14 !!

Rene Herse Bon Jon Pass are super quick super comfy but certainly not cheap. I've loved every one of their tyres I've used just magic.

@officerfriendly I have 25mm internal rims and am using vittoria Corsa control in 700x30c with no issues. I’ve used the 33.3 Jack Brown tyres on there as well, and have just taken some 700x40 Terreno zeros off. The Terreno zero’s are the first batch of tnt tubeless tyres; marked on the casing as 700x35, decal on the side is 700x37c and actually measured size is between 40-42mm depending on the rim! I’m not that fussed on them so if they interest you or others then shout. I’m not giving them away mind.

I'd have said that up until both of my 38s spontaneously split their sidewalls in identical ways whilst not being ridden for 6 weeks. Not impressed.

Oof, I've been running mine for a couple of months with no issues, hopefully they will be OK in the long term...

Thanks for the responses all. A lot of the the tyres suggested seem to be gravel tyres, and I worry that the increased grip and knobbliness of gravel tyres will lead to slight increases of rolling resistance on the road. Not really intending to ride off road, this is for a road only bike. Riding with some folk who are quite fast with their carbon wonderbikes and don’t want to lag behind too much!

Was hoping to find a pair of road slicks that simply come in a slightly bigger size.

Voyager Hypers are discontinued unfortunately, have found them to be fantastic so far and only ever had one puncture.

The Conti GP5000 look great but I can’t seem to find them in 36, the smallest seems to be 32c.

The Strada Biancas and the Gravel King’s look great, but they share my same concern with them both being gravel tyres. The GKs look fantastic in tan-wall, are they really as fast at the Voyagers? Might be tempted to grab a pair in that case.

I have heard great things about Rene Herse tyres but they are way too much for me to spend unfortunately.

I recently bought some bontrager R3 32's hardskins to use on my gravel bike, the roll very well, no noticeable difference to the 25c gp4000's I had before

I've got some Jack Brown Green on my commuting bike and they have a nice ride, can't quite judge the speed but riding with them they feel reasonably fast.

I've had voyager hypers, GK slicks and 32mm GP5000. I would rate the gp5000s as the best. I think they're very comfy too despite being narrower than the others

The issue with the GP5000s and some of the other suggestions is they're 32mm, which wouldn't normally be an issue except my rims have an inner width of 25mm - KOM i25s. The minimum recommended tyre width is actually 42mm according to WTB. Found 35s okay, if a bit sketchy on sharp corners, but definitely wouldn't want to go narrower.

Aside from the fact that the Jack Browns are 33mm, this going to sound rather snobbish but honestly don't fancy getting a pair of cheapo Planet X tyres. Would rather spend a bit more, plus they also seem to be gravel oriented.

I just wish the mainline road tyres came in 35c, there seems to be seldom many options unless you go touring style. Largest I can seem to find are the GP5000 in 32c.

@officerfriendly Confusingly, there are two types of Gravel King - the "Gravel King SK", which is more of a knobbly gravel tyre, and the "Gravel King" which is completely slick like the Voyager Hypers. I've got the latter type and have used them almost exclusively on road so far where they've been fantastic. FYI, the Compass/Rene Herse tyres are actually made by Panaracer, just to a slightly higher spec/price point.

The gravelkings seem like a good shout to be honest, think I'll just go with them. They even have lower rolling resistance than the voyager hypers at lower pressures. They do a plus version with additional puncture protection, I wonder if this will affect rolling resistance that much? Will probably end up getting those.

So are the Jack Browns. (I know you've decided against them on account of size and retailer, OP)
