Currently run 2.25 mtb tyres but thinking may swap to something like 42c conti speed ride or schwalbe marathons for a bit more road speed - guess I use 50 / 50 on / off road

recognise I'll lose some off road ability but any views on how much?

thanks

I rode a mixed route with some work colleagues on Friday, on my Carrerra Subway commuter, shod with Schwalbe Kojack's (totally smooth).
Ok, so you wouldn't choose them for off road but I was surprised how much they did actually grip. 😕

Smallblock8's ?

I've found Big Apples good offroad except for gloop and dust. Currently on Marathon Extreme, but I think I'll go back to Apples. Depends on your offroad I suppose.

You could try something like the Schwalbe Smart Sam - they've got a nearly solid ridge down the center line so they run well on road, but have a good tread for off road stuff. That said, I've used Conti Sport Contacts (completely slick) for touring and the only thing they were really sketchy on was loose stuff like gravel and sand.
