Well my winter plan appears to have worked (warning smug content)

Spring is here and the time for winter [s]miles[/s] hours has, for my training plan at least, come and gone. I've spent a lot of time in the shed on the turbo since ice stopped commutes in most of January and February. 5am starts to do 2.5 hours before work were not fun.

195 hours average zone 3 later and speed phase is here celebrated with the agony of an FTP test. A more suitable course for the test and better pacing means true comparison is not possible. I think the 18% gain since the last test, at the start of the programme, is more than statistical noise and corresponds well with how much HR zone has started to be below target power zone recently.

It's not all good news. Now the pain of intervals with the newly adjusted and harder power zones. And then there's the the start of the spring eating plan to get rid of the 3kg baggage.

All this to try to realistically gain 4 places - I'd better try to ensure I enjoy my riding or it might start to feel a bit pointless.

Well after a disappointing winter where I've done hardly any riding and my fitness in doldrums, I'm now moving from non-structured winter training to non-structured summer training, which is basically the same, but involves more attacking of Strava segments.

If I'm really lucky I'll manage to get into the 9th decile at a race.

Dare to dream.

What are your aims this year adsh? I know you do some 12 hour races as I was parked next to you at Erlestoke and torq! Are you doing these again or anything else.

After last year trying something structured (involving turbos and 6am starts) and feeling that it really didn't work, I'm just going to go out and ride when I feel like it as I have been doing throughout the winter. I plan on a few longer rides (did my first 100km XC ride of the year yesterday) over the next month getting ready for HONC, but with no events after that planned not really sure what I'm going to do!

After a pathetic winter full of being infected 🙁 I started to get "back on it" this week only for a patch of black ice to put that idea out of my head 🙁 I am starting to think someone doesn't want me to ride my bike 😆

Pete - same events just hoping to be quicker :D. Thanks to your wife for helping at Torq - I was wobbling at 10hrs but her encouragement really helped!
