So I've put a 36t cassette on my single ring 10sp CX bike, following the advice that putting a 9sp non-shadow MTB mech on there (XT Mid Cage that I had banging around) would work.

And it does... mostly. Except in the 2nd an 3rd gear where it slips around like a barsteward. So, I'm wondering if it's the fact it's an older, well-used mech that's stopping it from working, or whether the throw of it simply isn't going to work with the 10sp 105 shifters on it.

Anyone used this combo successfully? Would a shadow mech work instead? I have an almost new Deore 9sp mech which I could use, but have been advised that it probably won't work.

Alternatively, does anyone know the capacity of a 105 5600 short cage mech, if run with a single chainring?

Someone on this forum wrote a couple of years ago: "A standard 10s 105 short cage rear mech can take a 36 cassette but only on a single ring. The short cage definitely wouldn’t handle a double. With a longer cage you might cope with the chain slack but I suspect you need the tighter chain length to make sure the offset top jockey wheel clears the 36t."

But given that's the only source I've found explicitly stating this, I'm inclined to believe it's not true...

Any thoughts?

Was that me quoted there?

I can go and check the length of the 105 mech I was using, assuming I can find it.

I've happily run 9 speed XT shadow on a 10 speed 11-36 cassette and chain for years. Shifters are 5700 105, up front is a 105 triple mech and an XT trekking chainset. Try the newer mech, but see if you can borrow a mech alignment tool too.

I've got an old 9spd, non-shadow XT mech working with new 10 spd 105 (5703) shifters, and it works perfectly. Admittedly, that's only with a 28 tooth cassette, but that shouldn't matter.

I'd be looking at dragginess of cables or misalligned mech hangar.

It doesnt matter if it's a shadow mech or not (I've used both). I'd be checking mech hanger alignment before getting carried away with anything else.

Just looking back at it, yes it was! No offence intended - just that you seemed to be the only source confirming it, so I was naturally a bit sceptical.

Re: Hanger - Yeah I've straightened it with an alignment tool, but it still doesn't seem to want to play ball. I've ordered a new hanger just to give that a try (well that, and I should probably have one anyway)

I don't think it's due to draggy cables as it's shifting fine through the rest of the range.

Probably is the hanger. I'll give that a try and if it still doesn't work, chuck the deore on and see how that goes.

Well a new mech hanger didn't change a thing, so I chucked the 105 mech back on and with a bit of fiddling got it to shift perfectly. Sorry I doubted you, Swanny!
