IME fall out all the time just for sh*ts and giggles.

I may have this completely wrong but they are used when adjusting the cleat position, they sort of lock into place.

Correct. You can drill a hole in your shoe, and put a screw in - black bit attaches to screw head. Remove cleat, leaving black bit behind. Install new cleats (minus black bit) - perfectly aligned cleats.

I read a bit about them giving a 'memory' on the shoe when replacing the cleats, but that was for the original Look ones. I just whacked them onto the shoes (Spesh) using the guide lines anyway. Seems like the button makes some kind on imprint or similar, or stays there once cleat removed ?

njee - thanks for that. So I assume if not drilling holes I just attach the cleat, with button in it's normal place attached to the cleat ?

I believe they are there to stop the hard plastic pedal rattling against the hard plastic cleat.

They are for saving your cleat position, genuine Look cleats have them too IIRC
