I seem to recall someone here has used a lamp battery to do this, via a Buckpuck. Can anyone shed any more light on this?
You need a USB On the Go cable to do this, and then whatever battery you choose. Amazon for the cable, although you're probably also going to need a male to make adaptor as well.

Really????
A normal Garmin USB cable and a USB power supply works for me.
I wouldn't use light batteries unless I was certain of the output being reduced to 5V.

Same as Dibbs.
I don't know about light batteries, but I'd imagine that any of the external packs available for mobile phones should work (I think that USB charging/powering is fairly standardised).
I'm sure that somewhere on the net I've seen someone running a GPS from a dynamo
As above, surely any mobile phone external charger will work?
I can't see why not.
Portable USB battery pack and usual garmin cable here for a 12h ride last year when I used nav and Bluetooth live track
Battery sat in small tri bag on top tube when garmin needed juice towards the end
I use them all the time for long rides. Some models don't work (500?) or at least didn't because they went into charge mode and could not be used while charging.
800 is fine. I use the garmin cable and an Anker 3350mAh battery bought from amazon. Got me through 20+ hour rides.
I used to just use electrical tape to attach it under the stem or on the top tube. Now have some velcro straps off an old light battery.
I use an Anker battery and the old usb cable with my old garmin edge 200 as I can only get about 4 hours use out of it.
As above or via fag lighter on the motorbike. Seems that its only when plugged to a PC do most of them switch off
I've designed a circuit to power an charge eTrex 30 batteries from a dynamo. Non trivial and voids the warranty.
Since your garmin charges from USB just buy an external mobile phone power pack.

The 500 needs an on the go cable, possibly the 800 too. Most models don't though, plug in and go.

I've run my 800 off a rechargeable USB battery pack with a normal cable a few times, works fine.
