Having only used square taper, do external bb/chainsets mean that the pedals end up further apart than equivalent square taper? Even if it's a matter of a few mm?

I've not measured it, I could, but given chain lines haven't changed significantly, I'd guess no, but maybe a few mm.
Do you have a particular issue with Q factor?
