As above, just done a bike bits swop on to a new frame and the steerer tube is about 20mm short.I can get a piece welded on but was wondering if theres an insert type thing that can be used?

The tidiest and lightest solution I've seen was a piece of oak that had been lathed down to the steerer outer diameter, with about 2 inch at one end that was lathed down to just slightly larger than the inner diameter. It was then hammered in to the top of the steerer, the compressive forces holding it in place.

Sell forks. Buy 2nd hand forks with longer steerer.

What Simon said. 🙄

Otherwise - http://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/product/41/2929612101/bbb---extender-steerer-extender-286-254mm.html

Don't think I'd trust it for any more than canal paths though!

Steerer tube extenders which clamp on to existing steerer are a standard bit of kit widely available. However, they're not neat looking.. I have one on my hack/commute but wouldn't think to place on a decent build. That would be a case of changing forks or even just steerer (costly) or opting for a lower stack stem and headset.

you can buy steerer extenders

Google "BBB steerer extender", there are a couple of options

20mm isn't a massive amount though. You might get away with a low stack head set and a low stack stem

😯

Rather you than me.

Simon +1 unless you can find a low stack stem and headset.

I wouldn't weld to it as you have no idea what grade the material is (esp if an aluminium steerer). Some of the steerer extenders work ok (the ones that go in like an old quill stem) especially if at least one clamp bolt of the stem goes on the original steerer (so stem bridges the join).

Have a look at different stem designs - some use much less clamp length.

Also, how much head tube sticks out on the frame (if a conventional not integrated headset)? I've cut and then re-faced frames before (but mostly old hack frames not new ones).

e.g. if you are 20mm too short, then you can gain 10 mm on a different stem and cut and re-face 5 mm from top and bottom of HT = 20mm recovered (just be careful fork top caps clear the down tube before doing any cutting).

Crank Bros used to do a headset that was a low stack height, but then you have to watch out for the controls on top of the fork crown interfering with the downtube.

What fork is it btw? Some older forks can have a new steerer pressed in rather than a whole new CSU. Definitely possible with pre-2008ish Marzocchi's via windwave for about £40 or free with a service.

How much do you like your teeth? The only way I'd do it is to internally sleeve it, which would mean a smaller star nut.

Is it a steel steerer? I'd sleeve the inside and probably run a super long bolt the full length of the steerer too.

Knock out the star nut & use an Amoeba Headlock.
Cut a bit of spare steerer to make up the difference so the stem isn't being deformed by tightening only one bolt.
I've hammered a rigid forked SS like that for months.
