was just looking at the exposure site.am intrigued by their new reflex light (am not planning to buy one though,as debt/buying a new road bike will stop me 😉
http://www.exposurelights.com/product/000086/reflex-mk1-%28new%29/ anyone have/tried one?
sounds interesting 🙂The Reflex is capable of producing such incredible outputs by using Exposure's new Reflex Technology which monitors the surroundings to intelligently distribute light power to suit the terrain.
It has temperature sensors and accelerometers. This means it can work out how fast you are going and whether you are going uphill or downhill. It adjusts the output to suit - dimmer uphill, full power downhill.
Sounds clever. I assume it also has an override 'on' mode.

ah thanks (that sounds clever indeed 🙂
Four Hundred and Fifty Pounds for a bike light
Blimey
So I drop £450 on a bike light that ends up never using anything higher than its lowest setting because the light itself thinks I ride too slow?
Has anyone actually got one of these yet and have anything to say about it?
Sounds to me a solution to a problem that never existed
And over complicating a simple torch .
So can it tel when you are going over a slow nadgery trail and need lots of light
This is true, I suppose the point though might be optimising battery life so you can have max power when you need it but without having to constantly fiddle with the switch.Sounds to me a solution to a problem that never existed
And over complicating a simple torch .
Good point again, I suppose they've included a manual override, would be a bit silly if they didn't!So can it tel when you are going over a slow nadgery trail and need lots of light
I think Full Beam are doing one of these as well?
Just seems like feature bloat tbh, trying to create a selling point.
I added a remote switch for my Exposure, works great and means you can change settings without taking your hand off the bars.
Sounds similar to the new Petzl headtorch, as I understand it measures how much light is reflected back and then adjusts the out put accordingly.
It's called a Unique Selling Point - this appeals to that type of buyer who has to have the newest latest kit (just look at the queues for the latest iPhone, iPad, Windows8 blah blah) - there's a lot of these people about (and there was probably nothing wrong with their last bike light/phone/bike etc, and they only use 1/3rd of it's potential, but it's fantastic!
It is, however, a small step towards the next generation, which may have GPS enabled features, vibration sensing light output (more vibe = more output etc), interface to your HRM - I can't see a use for it yet but then the bloke who invented the mobile phone probably said the same thing
I've got an opportunity to get a Sixpack or one of these at a very good price, and trade in my max d. Just can't decide which to go for. Currently leaning towards the Sixpack.
When I first got my mark 1 max d it was the brightest thing on the trails. I realised at dusk til dawn that its w bit of an arms race now if you want to see by your own light rather than that of the person behind you.
Sounds to me a solution to a problem that never existed

Inclined to agree, love to try one, but just not sure!
I have one to play with I've not tried the auto stuff yet but you can just have it like any other one with the 3 modes or 2 or 4 modes I will have a better play later.
I called Exposure Lights (Ultimate Sports Engineering) yesterday as I was undecided to go for this or the six pack (mk3). Long story short they recommended the six pack. Very simple, weight and size was not an issue (real world weight between the two is negligible) and battery life (the six pack has a bigger battery meaning longer burn time).
Personally I believe the auto setting to be a gimmick and people who do buy the Reflex will ultimately use it in manual mode for all the reasons people have set out above.
This is around 150g lighter I think but you get 3 hours on full on the 6 pack and 2 on this I will try it next to a 6 pack and a Trout DD later.
I've had that, it's just more impetus to drop your mates/nearest rival 🙂its w bit of an arms race now if you want to see by your own light rather than that of the person behind you.
Don't like the idea of it unless it's very clever, no idea how they'd fix the "steep nadgery trail" example
It's 70g lighter & the lens looks the same as the Trout one
I presume when it says the Reflex can do 2 hours on full power, this is NOT the self-adjusting mode. Presumably the point of the self-adjusting is one setting that gives max power when needed but lasts a lot longer.
I decided to go for the sixpack in the end. I figured that the weight difference wasn't a big deal and the extra battery life should mean as much light as I'm ever likely to need for as long as I'm ever likely to need it. Will be interesting to see how long that remains the case. Anyone know if you can get a dip/diffuser cover for road use?
On the the 1st self adjusting mode it lasts 3 hours on max
Our man Dave Arthur is impressed.

Yeh I am loving it had it next to a six pack and it was brighter and wider.
temperature sensors and accelerometers
Must be some interesting logic behind this. Temp of the unit must be affected by ambient temperature - think riding at 25C vs sub 5C
And accelerometers measure acceleration not speed but I suppose they'd get away with detecting vibration. Would it still work on a road bike doing a constant, fast, speed downhill on very smooth tarmac?
Hi Guys I've posted a fairly detailed review of the Reflex Mk1, the new flagship high performance bike light in Exposure's 2013 lineup.
In short the Reflex features adaptive technology (including temperature sensors and accelerometers) that allows the light unit to sense how fast and at what gradient the bike is traveling and automatically adjust output (250-2200 Lumens) on the fly.
Turns out it's a pretty cool weapon out on the trail. The future belongs to smaller, lighter, brighter, smarter lights. Reflex tech is definitely one way to get there.
