Does anyone know if there is anything "clever" inside a piggy-back cell like protection circuitry? Or is it just an (expensive) 18650 cell with a cable attached and all of the protection is done in the light and/or charger?

I have a number of spare 18650 cells and am considering getting a new light. Just wondering if I could DIY a number of piggy-back batteries to increase the light run time / autonomy between charges.

Also interested as have a joystik and a white eye but would also like to run the red eye mini I've got.

The USE chargers are smart and detect when the battery is empty / full etc and the light's electronics takes care of controlling the current to power to the LED.

So I would have thought its just an battery inside a case. I cannot think what other "smart" function would be useful in the piggy back battery. It will have over and under charge protection but you can get 18650 cells with this and can even buy circuits to adapt cells that don't have the protection.

The White Eye or Red Eye Mini are just an LED in a case. They require the control electronics in the main light. For the White Eye you could possibly use a USB power bank. Some models have current regulation of 1 or 2 Amps. That might be suitable to power the White Eye and stopping it frying it self and freeing up the port on the Joystick for the Red Eye Mini.

Hmm, so it sounds like a single protected 18650 cell plus a cable with a barrel connector is all I need then, plus a bit of plastidip to waterproof it all.

That should work out a bit cheaper than the £40 that Exposure are asking!

If you find somewhere that sells the right plugs post back here, never found anywhere that stocks them.

I could mill you up a delrin (plastic) battery holder..
Cylinder with a threaded cap? Hole in one end with a small cable gland for the cable to pass into the battery.

Then you could stick a few charged 18650's in your bag and swap them over when needed.

Hi, I was keen to hear how you got on building a spare battery for your Exposure light. I too have some spare 18650 cells and was keen to rig something up but was interested to hear how you did it and what you used. Thanks!

Now got a Diablo so interested again in boosting its run time at full power.

Not the DIY answer you're looking for but I'm happy with my Smudge/MTB Batteries triple piggyback. It was £40ish for a triple versus similar money for the exposure single.

That's still a very viable option, any differences to the exposure model? Can it be charged with the original charger?
