You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Just taken delivery of my new Exposure light and on full whack, it is supposed to give me 2 hours burn time. I've used it 3 times.
100% = 1.50 hours
But then - it gets to showing 20 mins left on the display and conks out.
So in fact, from new (and not in particularly cold weather. Was about 10c last night) I'm losing a bit from both ends....and getting no more than 1.30 from it.
Disappointing.
Is this normal, or faulty? I have emailed Exposure but just wondered if anyone else has experience with them.
I emailed them about the poor run time on my brand new Diablo and they quoted that the run time was within tolerance. I thought this was bolox as if the run times are that variable they should use the worst case as the advertised figure.
Edit: they did say I could return it to be tested though.
The display should not conk out.
The actual burn time is variable, especially when the weather is cold. Mine varys quite a bit, but the display goes lower and lower counting down to a few minutes. Once I ran it completely flat and it unsurprisingly turned off. But it showed a decreasing number, the smaller it got the less it corresponded to actual time, but when its showing say 5 mins you just ride faster and don't complain it actually too 10 mins to shut off. I think mine was showing 4 or 3 minutes the last time I looked, then a short while later it went off, so it probably was pretty accurate.
No way should it shut off with 20 mins showing. Try it again and see if its a one off.
I'd give it a full charge and run down a couple of times first. My new joystick was a bit short on the first go, but it was previous generation so god knows how long it was sat on a shelf for.
just return it and get them to test it.
Although note that if its something like a toro (ive got one) then its only on the reflex setting so it dims the light when your stationary.
oh and try charging it for 24 hours
this is the only way i can get max runtime. You have to wait till you get an error code on the display which apparently means its fully charged
Daft question, but was it fully charged? It's not fully charged until the light on the charger turns green, don't use the display on the light as your guide.
nope just turning green only charges it to 90%
To cover the points above.
It wasn't cold - 10c...so wouldn't expect that to adversely impact run time.
It was showing 100% - but quoting 10mins less than 2 hours.
It shuts off completely showing 20mins remaining on full beam (and over an hour remaining on low - I thought one hour would have gotten me home last night as I lived 10 mins down the road. It didn't!)
Although note that if its something like a toro (ive got one) then its only on the reflex setting so it dims the light when your stationary.
It is a Toro, but I haven't enabled the Reflex mode.
Also - when I plug in the charger after the light has died, it is showing 16% immediately. and that rapidly climbs (in a matter of seconds) to 20%.
100% = 1.50 hours
So are you saying that instead of having 2hours (120 minutes) at full charge, it only showed as having 1hour 50 minutes (110 minutes) or 1.50 hours (90 minutes)?
If you timed it running for 110 minutes, then it is within 10% of the advertised 120 minutes and I would be happy that it is within tolerance.
Not sure about the turning itself off at 20 minutes though. That might suggest a fault.
Their Customer Service is great, suggest you call them and arrange to send it back for a check. I have had a few issues over the years, especially with Reflex versions (MaxxD) and they have always fixed or replaced with rapid turnaround.
Had similar problems with a Diablo so started doing timed run times. It was not until I did long charging periods like 24hrs that it began to get in spec. The last 24hr test run on PGM 3 low I did actually lasted 30 hrs. Joystick has never been a problem and has always runs within spec.

110 minutes rather than 120 mins.
and yes, switching itself 20 mins before it is showing it's due to.
ive had less than adverised run times from my toro.
If i charge it on monday (fully 24hrs) and leave it till wed it will not provide the full run time. however it still shows 100% charge.
if i charge it till the plug goes green or a few hours more it shows 100% initially and this will drop over a few days.
the only way to get the full runtime is to charge it 24 hours until it errors on the display. It will then give full runtime if you use it within a day.
I sent mine back and they said it was ok.
wish i had a maxxd but i cant afford one.
oh and ive only had move switch off once. It showed 0% on the display though and had dropped the beam strength a lot. I switched it to high and it went off.
As andybrad states , charge until message alternates between 100% and and error number then you will get a closer to full charge than the 100% charge message alone. Also if it's a new light give it 3 good charges before you give up on it as these cells need a few charges to initialize properly. Another thing I would avoid running flat completely between charges if you can, 20 % is normally where I would intentionally take it down too. You have a great lamp and exposure lights are a fantastic company to deal with so enjoy 🙂
Had a dabble with the charger instead of USB last night and seem to be up to full burn time.
Actually - despite being on "non reflex mode" - it exceeded stated run time. albeit just sitting on the side in the garage.
Result! - but will try on the trails tomorrow.
yea dont charge it from usb. that is rubbish
