Mine is Glasgow. Spent countless hours in traffic etc over the years and driving all over the city , always wondering where those little rat-runs and paths go .Today I took the van to Glasgow , parked in Pollock Park at 7.30 and just went out for a ride ,I have been waiting on my separated shoulder healing so a ride like this is spot on to get back out on the bike. I arranged to meet a mate about lunchtime for a couple of pints to break the day up and watch the world go by . Didn't really go anywhere mega exciting this time, just went where I wanted to with no set route or agenda (apart from meeting mate at the pub)The weather was great and offered great views about the city and beyond , went down along the old docks and out to the new transport museum . Loads of different things to see right across the spectrum of life from one extreme to another . Its just a great way to see it on a bike. RULES for this kind of day out . 1: Don't take a map - defeats the purpose 2 : Go early - I would have liked to have started about 6.00 just to get the city centre completely deserted then visit it later on in the day. 3: Take the mountain bike - better suited for nipping over kerbs and down the steps into Queen St station 😀 4: Stop at traffic lights ( Some of them anyway )and simply take a look around. 5: Say 'Hi' to any roadies you see on route - at least you made the effort ( sorry but I thought this was just a myth but I must have said Hi to at least 8 roadies today without a single reply , Fixies always gave a reply or a nod ). Also seen some really cool cars and bikes out there , AC ME3000 , strectched beetle wedding car , gorgeous sounding green Bullit Mustang. Yellow Ducati showing the tosser on the fat Jap kid-on Harley type bike how a bike should really sound and go like. Go on try it once , I reckon I did about 45 miles today so you can still keep up your fitness levels , theres plenty of hills in Glasgow 8)
Good effort - an excellent way to really get to know the layout of a city for sure.
I spent the best part of four years driving round London in a lorry and two weeks ago me and a mate drove down to the smoke and had a day of cycling round the place. Great day out. Cycling in the rush hour traffic was such a buzz.
I learned my way around Manchester and Liverpool by bike. It's so much better for understanding how it all fits together. I know Manchester especially like the back of my hand as a result.
