It’s got to be almost 20 years since I last rode the Exmoor Explorer, back when it was a charity event, and I was thinking about doing it again until I looked at some of the organisers videos and photos and from what I saw it looked like an e-bike event… or rather, mainly e-bikes.
can anyone who has recently pedalled it without a battery to help tell me what it’s like now? If I do go I will be on a 2010 yeti arc 26er hard tail so I am a bit concerned the route, and the importantly the cut off timings, are now focussed on battery assist riders which no way can I keep up with.
P.S. Ok, I will come clean, my real concern is that by the time I pedal my way to the cake stop the blinking ebikers will have got there way before me and scoffed all the flapjacks.
I rode it annually for about 4-5 years, last time being about 14 years ago. Back then, there were 300 riders in the short loop alone.
Last year, I volunteered at a checkpoint - 124 riders in total, 34 of which were e bikes. Results are here: https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=358707
I'm riding it this year (glucose powered). Thought I'd do my bit to try to resurrect a cracking event, representing the non-e fraternity.
Anyone else fancy actually pedalling it this year?
PS I totally get the whole e-MTB thing when you want to session a bike park... but 'cmon, flapjack at an event like this needs to earned LOL.
I‘ve ridden this event on and off since 2007 and the last time was 2023. Always glucose powered.
it‘s a great event in a great location.
Well worth the day out and perfectly do-able on a hardtail 😎
The event email is out (for all of those who've registered). Key points:
1) Two 20-ish mile loops as per usual.
2) Cut off time for the extra loop is 13:30.
3) Starts from 9am to 10am - if you're doing the long loop (and don't have a motor), you're better off starting at 9am for a bit of extra leeway.
4) Results are no longer categorised (for cycling events). You'll only get a start and finish time.
So there's something peculiar about cycling events that will prevent them from publishing categorised results this year. Quote from the email:
This year, as per the Mendip Murmuration, you will only be given a start and finish time which will be for your information only.
These times will not be broken down into distance, gender, age, e-bike/non-e-bike etc as this constitutes a race which these events are not and never have been.
But for some reason, the running/walking events are still categorised? https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=395191
Keen to know why cycling would be classed as racing, but not running. Any thoughts?

Your not legally allowed to race on bridleways, hence if you don't award a position you can't have been racing

👍
Good to know - I guess the running events will eventually follow suit.
Nobody's winning any actual points or medals, but I expect some will want to know how well their e-bike did on the day. 🤣
There's no such thing as e-running (yet?!) so at least they're all in the same sort of category.
