Yes, brilliant. And if Tim Podcock hadn't been doing the Vuelta we'd very possibly be holding both men's and women's titles.

You are missing it though, it's  'hidden' in the how to watch the WC thread

Glad somebody else noticed...

However this is not the forum to come to for MTB news. Politics, Volkswagon T5s etc maybe, but certainly not anything remotely important in UK MTB land.

She absolutely dominated the 2nd half of the race. History made

Great to see the respect PFP gave to her post race.

Hopefully the start of more success at the Olympic length races in the future.

Not quite sure what to say. She'd put in some good turns during the season but I'm not sure anyone saw this coming, epic result!

And she very nearly got the gold in XCC event as well, just missing out by half a wheel length in the sprint...
Great performance Evie!

Yes it's amazing isn't it? I love the way she races - just looks like she is absolutely smashing it for the entire race, no letting up even with the line in sight and no one in sight behind her.

Amazing milestone for GB MTB! And lovely to see T-Mo up on the course encouraging and giving time checks - top coach (feeling old where we remember Tracey at the races as an unsponsored teenager... ).

Getting a bit bored of the spoiler moaning. It is an mtb website. Don't visit if you don't want the news. How long should people wait for you to be bothered to watch the telly?

I’m a bit confused can someone explain what Evie has won? I have been following the World Cup which Loana Lecomte has been leading the points. Is this a different competition?

Each year there is a single World Championship race across all the UCI cycling disciplines (road, MTB, BMX etc,.). The winner is that years world champion and they get to wear the rainbow stripes on their jersey.

Absolutely fabulous result!! Great ride, kept her own pace, and gradually caught PF-P, and was technically brilliant. Hard work paying off!! And finished with her trademark smile and the usual modest interview.....

With having XCO World & Olympic champions, it would be nice to somehow host a XCO World Cup round.

Watching the replay now. Amusing to hear Warner refer to Prevot as the outgoing champ the moment Richards passed her in the second lap. He corrected himself very quickly but he's getting better at predicting these races.

Absolutely amazing ride. I thought she wouldn’t be properly recovered from the monumental effort she put in for the short track, but I was glad to be wrong.

Absolute superstar.

With having XCO World & Olympic champions, it would be nice to somehow host a XCO World Cup round.

Given that we have a pretty much guaranteed downhill race every year (covid aside) I think it would have to be done at Fort William as a double header arrangement - does Fort Bill have the ability and inclination to create/host such a track?

And if Tim Podcock hadn’t been doing the Vuelta we’d very possibly be holding both men’s and women’s titles.

Sadly not, bizarre rule that forces anyone under 23 to enter the U23 race for World Champs. See also Loanna Leconte.

Watched this yesterday, Evie absolutely smashed it. From the very start she was on the gas and had the tactics nailed. Takes some incredible stamina and bike skills to keep at that pace for the whole race. A thoroughly well deserved win. Looking forward to the next couple of WC races.

The last MTB world champs in UK was in Fort William and it was awesome! All the cycling world champs are in Glasgow in 2023, I imagine the DH will be at Fort William as you need a mechanical uplift.

Awesome ride by Evie - just brilliant.

– does Fort Bill have the ability and inclination to create/host such a track?

2007 world champs were there, the legacy being the some of the trails there now - Witches etc.

So yeah, it's got to be near perfect with some old stuff + some fresh cut new stuff to suit the modern xco standards. The arena/event village is sorted too.

yeah, when Fort Bill had the World champs on 2007 they did the XC on a variation largely based on the Witches Trails IIRC

My point was that looking at the general format of world cup races (2022 below) the only way a country* gets to have both XC and DH is to have them together.
As Fort William is fairly established as an every year event I don't see that getting given up, and while I have ridden both Hadleigh and Dalby and see their merits for XC I somehow can't picture them pulling off a 4 minute downhill course.

*I note they describe FW as Scotland, not UK...

2022 Downhill World Cup Calendar
26-27 March: Lourdes, France
21-22 May: Fort William, Scotland
10-12 June: Leogang, Austria
8-10 July: TBC
15-17 July: Vallnord, Andorra
29-31 July: Snowshoe, U.S.A
5-7 August: Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada
2-4 September: Val di Sole, Italy

2022 Cross-Country World Cup Calendar
8-10 April: Petropolis, Brazil
6-8 May: Albstadt, Germany
13-15 May: Nove Mesto Na Morave, Czech Republic
10-12 June: Leogang, Austria
8-10 July: TBC
15-17 July: Vallnord, Andorra
29-31 July: Snowshoe, U.S.A
5-7 August: Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada
2-4 September: Val di Sole, Italy

However, note the addition of a new venue in Petropolis, Brazil. The first ever in South America? or the first for a long while.
Would imagine a large part of that to be down to Henrique Avancini.
Having Richards and Pidcock as reasonable podium contenders (in the very least) every race could give a boost for a UK round.

It is on my map too 🙂

But we seem to compete as "team GB" with support or otherwise from "British cycling".

As it seems every country gets (at most) one event, it does seem to be pertinent to decide if FW is the "Scottish round" or the "British round" of the WCDH circuit.

Yes, ha ha, never understand the amount of laboured chat on here about the TDF, rugby, what next n+1 watch to buy, which shares to buy etc. etc. - MTB racing in comparison seems to get ignored apart from a few posts which then get abuse for daring to mention who won !

Absolutely brilliant, just watched highlights at RedBull. Mens was a proper good finish, the Schurter overtake halfway up a tree!

Bike racing can be tactical, is part of what we are seeing strategic as well - Evie Richards finished 7th or 8th in the Olympics, quite a long way (3 mins) down on the field, has she specifically peaked later for the Worlds and as a result is now getting these results?

If so, well done - she'll have rainbow cuffs for evermore, even after the year is up.

Not to take away from her athleticism, I think she’s just learned the field and built confidence. Her last two races and wins are both very similar tactically - stick with the leaders not doing too much work then hit the front hard with a lap and a half to go. Her technical skill has come on very fast also. I did think she double bluffed yesterday, getting on the front on lap 3 - I think - and forcing a response only to rescind the lead - maybe they thought her chance had gone then.

Great to see her win again, great to have such a charismatic rider on the top step of the podium.

When interviewed after the win yesterday (or perhaps it was the XCC on Friday) she mentioned that she trained to peak for the Olympics so I guess she peaked a little later than planned.

Great ride for the win once she had the lead she just kept powering away, but I think we were robbed of a great race by McConnel's puncture, who looked to have the edge until that point.

Lecomte being ill for the last few races (although she didn't look that ill, she looked to be positively glowing) and PFP withdrawing has helped thin out the front of the field but the time Evie has been putting into people and the strength of her riding is really impressive.

Did she complete a lap with a flat until she could get back to the pit, or does someone run over with a replacement?

Missed that bit in the coverage.

What I find amazing, apart from Evie's power and determination, is how two individuals (me and Evie) use the same coach yet one wins the rainbow jersey and the other can't even get a podium in the fun category at a local race. Right......where is that take away menu and my lunchtime beer..........

I guess it depends on what you're being coached for.
Sometimes I need someone else to shout at me to get off the sofa.

Same. I was obviously just joking about why the difference, but oddly she does use the coach for the same reasons as I do. I think it might be a combination of pie consumption, 25 additional years on earth, motivation, and general skill. 🙂

Another strong ride; the McConnell puncture only cost her 20 secs, but finished 1m 30 down. I think Evie would probably have won anyway.

Will be interesting to see how her form translates to the upcoming CX races - and later to the Worlds. On the right course, she is capable of winning a CX World title.

She looked very strong all lap every lap even the push up was CX strong. The rest were flagging on that steep climb by the end.
She said she wasn't riding flat out and was keeping a bit back in case an attack came as she couldn't hear the splits.

@johnjn2000 yes, same for me.

One thing having someone from your home town do so well. It was the same when Liam Killean was riding strong, and the moseleys too.
But there's something about seeing a pro rider, loving riding the trails I rode and trained on back when I raced in the early 90's, having the same push to improve I did (but obviously more capable!), in the place that once held the largest MTB event in europe, during the first wave of British MTB.
Are we seeing a new wave of British MTB (MWOBMTB)? has the success of british XC riders started to capture the attention of the masses? I hope so.

Certainly Evie's performances have been brilliant, but it's more than that, she knows she is capable of wins, but doesn't appear to get bogged down with tactical talk that you see a lot of other riders doing in interviews. Maybe it's her relatively young years, but she seems to really enjoy riding her bike, and talking about riding her bike, and that's very relatable and a joy to watch.

@lovewookie could not have said it better myself, she is awesome in many ways.
This is probably a discussion for a topic of its own but it's relevant here. I was talking with an elite rider/coach at the weekend about the hype around the Tennis player who won the US Open the other week. Even the bloody Queen sent a pat on the back for Emma! Now we look at what Evie has achieved in the space of a few weeks, where is the appreciation outside of the MTB community? Bugs me
