Hi
Has anyone ridden this through france? We're planning on getting the ferry to santander and then riding to roscoff. There is the obvious route up the eurovelo 1 through France although we'll probably look at doing some diversions. Anywhere worth heading for that shouldn't be missed
Aye we did it on the tandem a couple of years ago. A lot of it is very family friendly being on cycle paths and only hillyish in Brittany. Accom is easy. We booked a day ahead on Booking.com though in September. It's a nice if not very exciting exercise in easy cycle touring.
yes, me and the wife have ridden a lot of the french section.
left the car in portsmouth.
ferry to st malo, picket a car up and drove to the spanish border.
left the car, and cycled back up to st malo.
brilliant trip.
la rochelle for a couple of nights, and nantes for 2 nights were both ace.
and the best seafood i have ever had along the route is worth a trip

Santander up to Roscoff is exactly the ride I did in 2017. Don’t know where you’re based but there’s a direct train into Plymouth from the Midlands.
Turns out Northern Spain is also quite lumpy! I really enjoyed it, easy riding, easy navigation in France at least. More or less followed the Camino in Spain.
Accommodation wise I either camped (wild or site), or stopped at hotels or BnB - in May, I was fine finding a room.
EV1 is very easy and relaxed cycling, it does get a bit repetitive though as the southern portion is nearly all cycle track through pine forests. You are always close to the sea but usually on the wrong side of the (massive) dunes! I had envisioned taking a dip whenever I fancied, but it was actually a bit of an undertaking and involved leaving the bike a long way from the beach.
I ended up cutting inland on the 'Velo Francette' for a change of scenery and got a ferry back from Caen. Not trying to put you off EV1 but I think France is easy and pleasant enough for cycle touring that you shouldn't restrict yourself.
https://cycle.travel/map does a great job at showing the EV and non-EV cycle routes clearly to see how you could link them up
Cheers for the replies. Definitely going to steer away from EV now I think. Probably cut east of boedeux up to perigueux. Back towards La Rochelle the up to Nantes
Perhaps cycle up Le Lot valley to Figeac then North towards Limousin, all very senic and rural,if you don't mind a hill.
Also +1 on Velo Francette route.
