Every year I go abroad with the group of old reprobates I normally cycle with. However I am getting fed up with normal roady trip and would like to do Euro mtbing but we need somewhere that the died-in the-wool roadies will be happy with but the minority mtbers can get some off road action. Any suggestions for somewhere, easy to get to,hire bikes available[road and mtb] and places to have a good drink?

I think most of the main MTB spots will have plenty of fantastic road riding as well, I spent 2 weeks in Morzine this summer and did more road riding than mountain biking.

North Spain? Basque country, Doug (off here) runs an MTB guiding company round there, http://www.basquemtb.com/ - the road biking in that area is fantastic, too.

Try Bareges and Ardiden Velo in the Pyrenees

Thanks Mogrim! Great road biking round here, we have done a few mixed trips using a local roadie guide who is a friend of mine. It was good fun and we tried to start or finish in the same place for both groups. I should really get a road bike some time.

Really good road biking around Olvera; The Grazalema park nearby is the best area, lots of back roads and a great many combinations are possible with mountain climbs or more undulating. Feel free to email me if you want any more info.

Thanks for the imput, I like the sound of the Pyrenees as I have done some motorbike trips there and enjoyed it, but Spain sounds great...and, oh. the alps..
Plenty of ideas, thanks again

Take a look at Mallorca if you are happy to fly and hire. I'd recommend http://www.tramuntanatours.com/rentbike.html if you are hiring. Very helpful guy called Andy who is part(?) British runs the place and provided great advice.

I should really get a road bike some time.

Bear in mind road biking is tough, it's not just getting someone to drive you up to the top of a hill then fanny about getting down again 🙂

Haha Mogrim. You do realise that for the last three years I've been taking people up in the van, riding down then riding up to get the van while they have a drink or eat. It's only this year that I have had a driver and gone soft! I thought with road bikes you rode up and got people to drive you back down 🙂

If you've a van driver then can't you do road bikes for the ups and mountain bikes for the downs, like this: http://www.velovert.com/article/5942/le-tour-du-mont-blanc-un-exquis-melange-d%E2%80%99effort

What, and miss out on the fun of flying down a mountainside, overtaking the cars and what have you? That's half the fun!

Portes du Soleil, we stayed with Ski Blue Ridge in Les Gets and there was a mixed group MTB/Roadies. The owner (Rob) has done a decent amount of road riding, lots of road rides in TdF climbs in the area.

This year I did Destination-X with Trail Addiction in Areches/Beaufort and there were lots of roadies about, again more TdF climbs in the area. There is an interesting looking company in Samoens called Bike Alp you might like to check out.
