Have a family holiday booked staying near Irton Hall hoping to take the bike and get out for some rides not likely to have more than 3-4hrs away from the family as we'll have a 3 month old baby along with us. looking for recommendations of rides happy with any style of ride but will be taking a full suss so something justifying using that would be great.
ta in advance
For something right there Eskdale / Miterdale circuit is nice. Bw south side of river Esk to Boot, then up to Burnmoor tarn - boggy but rideable after dry weather we have had. Then bw back down through miterdale (conceptual kind of bw at first, but path takes shape once you're heading down the valley).
There are better rides further afield but that's a nice spin close to where you are staying.
I did a thread on this a while back, so worth doing a search
Didn't find much in Eskdake TBH. Best ride was over into Wasdale then Black Sail south there and back and up to styhead and back.
Fuctifinow how to link to a route in Strava these days but basically it was Eskdale, Burnmore Tarn, WasdaleH, Styhead Tarn, WH, Black Sail Pass, Miterdale Forest
Bit more than 3 or 4 hours though

Is that the sixth picture on this page? If so I would heartily suggest avoiding it like the plage.

What they said ☝️
I seem to remember riding down the bw in miterdale forest from Irton fell back down to Eskdale green.
Think it was decent.
You could also consider driving up to wasdale head (not far) up to sty head, down to seathwaite, stonethwaite, stake pass, don't drop down into langdale - thrutch/push across to angle tarn, esk hause, sty head, back down to wasdale head
Thanks for the input guys think there’s enough there to keep me happy as I’ll only get a few opportunities plus hoping to get some bouldering in if my skin allows it on eskdale granite.
should have said Im quite happy with a bit of cheek if it obeys rule #1. Do if there’s any additional suggestions let me know.
also stuff in the duddon i can probably get round too if it's worth the drive and corrispondingly shorter ride.
happy with any style of ride
There's plenty of gravelly pootles from your door. You could head down into eskdale green, back under muncaster fell via the gulf course to ravenglass, over to drigg and then across to nether wasdale for a feast at the sawmill cafe and then back to irton hall. That's a leisurely 3 hours including cafe stop.
As an alternate, there's also a b**"*""" push up into miterdale forest from the sawmill, but the descent back to eskdale green is worth it

Agreed. That's part of the route I suggested. Whatever you do, don't try the north side of this BW down Irton Fell. It's godawful

Slackboy knows the one. Its shit up or down, but the southern Mitredale descent is good at least so do it as a there and back from the south or north to south if part of a loop
Hopefully this link works https://explore.osmaps.com/route/28360531/eskdale?lat=54.39946&lon=-3.3526&zoom=11.3953&style=Leisure&type=2d
There's other stuff in Miterdale and Keyhow plantation - follow yer nose.
The Bower House is a decent pub and the Woolpack in upper Eskdale does decent beer and pizzas.
Ravenglass is worth exploring too.
well thanks for all your input just had a great week in eskdale managed to get some great weather unfortunately a broken finger and doctors orders stopped any riding getting done but the pub and cafe recommendations were appreciated, especially the sawmill in nether wasdale.
i did walk/run 3 potential descents that i think would be worth riding, as mentioned the blea tarn footpath looks great, also the bridal way down to boot from brats hill and the eskdale side of the bridal way under harterfell all look worthy of riding to me. Hopefully be back to check them out along with some bouldering when im recovered as we loved the general atmosphere and scenery.
