Ive done a few roady trips, Majorca, Ventoux, stuff like that so I know what I’m in for there. The thing is I really want to do the Alps soon (mtb), and really have no idea what it will cost.

I dont have an itinerary or anything but what do you think of as a rough figure for your trips, for however long you go, and wherever you go?

I’d also be interested in Canada and the States costs as well.

Erm, top of my head.

Fairly fugal vehicle from Cardiff to Alps and back (fuel, ferry/tunnel and tolls) £400-£500

Lift passes €10-€14 a day depending on resort and how many you buy at once.

Accom €650 this year for a 4 bed apartment that could sleep 8 I guess if you want to cram everyone in, but we’re only 4 and it’s a family trip. Usually it’s dirt cheap - €150 a week each if you’re sharing with mates for a nice apartment in town, secure parking, sat tv, WiFi, nice beds and kitchen etc.

Spends are whatever you want them to be, there’s nice restaurants and beer is expensive if you’re on the lash, but super market food and booze is cheap if you’re on a budget and only care about riding - one of my mates was living on €20 a day and didn’t suffer.

Whistler was a lot more, but we went fairly deluxe.

’Cheap’ flight was £850 including bikes.

Week with Bearback was £600 I think.

Week liftpass was £200 I think.

All told with with a few days sightseeing in Van in a basic hotel and probably a bit too much living it up the whole trip cost £3k somehow.

I've spent ~£1000 for a week in the alps which included some expensive bits- new wheels at resort prices.

I think I could do 2 weeks in whistler for about £2k with the cheapest accommodation possible and getting the cheapest flight possible on odd days.

Have fun. Where ever you go 🙂

Yeah i'd go in at about £600 for the week in Morzine, either Flying or Driving. Possibly a bit less for week 2 as not paying driving costs both weeks.

Things add up as non essential costs, body armour, FF lid, DH tyres, Pads etc... They're all things you forget as they're not directly associated when on trip, but need buying really.

Depends if you are on your own or with someone. Two of us going to Les Arc region in July. We are figuring about £500 each for the week (on the cheap). We are driving and camping in Bourg.  As mentioned above, its the extra bits that add up - tyres etc. I have already started accumulating the extra bits now as they come up in sales.  Just before my mate became available I was about to book a guided week that would have cost me around £11-1200 including flights etc.

I guess it all depends on how luxury you want to go. I'm happy to eat beans all week to get awesome riding!

Me and GF did a 3 week biking and sighseeing roadtrip around US Mid West last year and it cost us £2400 each.

That's for everything - flights, minivan rental, hotels, food, expenses and no cost-cutting options.

Cost us a bit less the year before for same idea around BC but was a few days less.

I am expecting this years trip to be around the same order as flight, car, hotels booked already and looking similar costs.

I think I could do 2 weeks in whistler for about £2k with the cheapest accommodation possible and getting the cheapest flight possible on odd days.

We've booked for 2 weeks late August / September and paid £430 for flights and £450 for 2 weeks self catered accommodation.

Lift pass will be £300, Transfers £80, Upgrade to annual travel insurance policy £30 and I usually budget £50 a day so £700ish spends. Add on the other boring stuff you usually forget about (fuel to airport, airport parking, etc) and £2k per fortnight sounds about right.

You need to be more precise than "Epic".

Different things seems "EPIC" for different people.

I would say scrap obvious locations like Alps and do something really epic.

Cheap fly to Wrocław in Poland, self catering accomodation for equivalent of 5-15 quid a day and explore Polish/Czech border mountains. Quite different experience than UK.

They have some trail center style riding there - Czarna Góra, Smrek, Rychlebskie Scezki but there is much more than that...

Send bike by courier (40quid one way) unless you like traveling with bike. I do not like it at all...

Cheers!

I.

This year having a week with Bike-Alp in Briancon.  £550 each luxury half board (exc lunch) with guiding (which is promised to be Epic) and some van uplifts.

Sharing vans (there's 10 of us) ... Tunnel and ferry £60pp return,  Fuel 100E per vehicle each way, same again on tolls.

Lunches, the odd lift pass, post ride refreshments, call it a grand all in.   Over half that is paid few months in advance though (accom and tunnels) so we'll have forgotton about that by the time we go, so the trip will feel innexpensive.

Man maths ftw.

Flight to Kathmandu £600. 4 weeks touring on hard tail about £1000 spends for bit of luxury. That’s epic. Roll on October.

£3,100 for 7.5 weeks in NZ this winter all in with flights etc.

Alps week £1k should cover easily with a company like the inside line including flight, guiding etc. All the way down to 400 all in for a week in morzine with bike morzine then food and lift pass on top.

We did 2 weeks in the Alps in the camper last summer for about 700 each all in between 2.

3 Days Lifted Riding in Utah

4 Days in Whister During Crankworx

Flights from Oz

Probably about £1500 all in but part of that work payed for.

2 weeks touring Utah and doing Crankworx was probably £1500 plus flights and nothing pre booked

1 week down in the Apls with whiteroom is going for about 7-900euro plus flights

Basically as much as you want to spend or you can crank it right down.

Some great advice, thanks.

I’m just pleased to be in some mountains on my bike so epic is easily obtainable for me.

My mates want to do an India trip, but I can’t help thinking I’d be shitting through the eye of a needle for two weeks.

3 months - Canada to Mexico (in pounds £) by bicycle. Started 14th of Sep and Finish about 15th of December. I didn't include December but spend around 170.00 I think. Mostly on food/beer/uber to airport in Los Angeles!!!!! I have listed the four largest costs of each month - the rest was misc items.

September - 777

Groceries - 192
Eating out - 123
Bike repairs 101
Hotel 71

October - 763

Groceries 225
Bike Repairs 140
Eating out 105
Hotel - 99

November - 541

Transportation (got a ferry long distance bus ride in Mex) - 148
Groceries - 146
Hotels - 97
Eating out - 86

Flew back in December.

Total  - 1991 spent.

+ flights - 300 + insurnace 160 (?I think can't remember)

Grand Total (excluding equipment and pre-trip bike expenses) - £2451

Note: Could have made fairly large savings if I had cut out eating out and drinking beer. Food was mighty expensive in Canada, US was cheap if you eat total junk food, both had expensive hotels and campsites so I avoided these - Mexico cheap food and hotels and beer. Mexico was my favourite 😉
