Which purple dashed lines can a cycle on?
That was nearly a sentence.
I 😆
Obvious troll is obvious
This had me worried too when I was doing the BB200. I just trusted Stu not to send us somewhere we shouldn't be.
serious question btw, I've never used an English OS map, looks foreign! 😆
Why don't you look at the Key which explains what everything on the map is?
cause i'm just using bing.
Why don't you use bing to google 'Ordnance survey key'? to get a webpage that shows you the key?
The key doesn't actually tell up your where you can cycle without fear of harassment. IIRC Bridleways are definitely OK. Beyond that, I've no idea.

You should've been worried about Welsh OS maps I think.
Anyway are you talking about the red dashed lines? Is there something wrong with your monitor? You can cycle on all but the shortest red dashed lines. If there's a black dashed line, well, you can probably chance it but it's not technically a right of way. Same goes for the white roads/white dashed roads.
Generally the long-short-long-short dashed lines and the ones with tabs on are bigger tracks; bridleways could be anything from a big track to non-existent, likewise footpaths. But RoW does not indicate an actual track. There are different symbols for tracks, roads and paths. However in the majority of cases even when there's a RoW but no track marked on the 1:50k, there is one, especially in upland areas.
See! The key doesn't tell you that.
(and the lines are pink)
A purple dashed line is a National Park Boundary - I think from the description most people could work out whether you can ride it 😉

It's context sensitive though. If you're in farmland, then the RoWs are less likely to be tracks if there's no track marked. However in the hills they often are. But there are still bogus ones in the hills - look out for the ones that are straight lines. They probably started out as lines on a map and do not exist. The ones that follow the landscape probably are real paths.
Where are you looking? Let us help 🙂
Depends on the map scale doesn't it? Can be confusing but just look at the legend.
You can ride on the long 'purple' ones. Which are actually red.
I prefer riding on the long dashed green ones.

look purple to me.
They are a sort of blue tinged red on that link. They should be red. Anyway the long dashed "red" lines are bridleways, the short dashed ones are footpaths.
The continuous orange lines are more of an indicator of what I can cycle on 🙂
cheers, no where in particular btw, just looking about mibbe visiting next year some time, was looking at a route from penrith up and over place called high street, can you camp up there?
Hah.. you can basically ignore the dotted lines on High St, the're not much use 🙂
You could camp up there yes but it's a bit exposed IIRC. Probably better places. Well I say could - you're not technically allowed to camp, but no-one stops you up in the hills.
Oh yeah - if you want confirmation of what's a good trail, cross-reference the map with Strava global heatmap.
good point ta.
Aye, too many different types of path on the key, I gave up and just ride all now.
Have you tried the maps in Wales and N Ireland Joe?
Russian maps resurrection!

[quote=teamhurtmore ]Have you tried the maps in Wales and N Ireland Joe?
Unless Wales has annexed Cumbria or N Ireland has an enclave near Penrith I'm failing to see why those would be relevant.
Here's the 1:50000 key that relates to the map linked to:-
Should be fairly clear from that which is bridleway (therefore bike friendly) and which is footpath (therefore not, strictly).
long dash is bridleway, short dash is footway. Zoom in further the pink/purple lines will turn green. Long dash orange (on 1:25000) is permissible bridleway so thats ok to ride as well.
LOL!TheGingerOne - MemberWhy don't you use bing to google
Glad someone finally spotted it 😉
