Are the likes of Clif , SIS , HighFive etc any better for you than say Jordans or Eat Natural you can buy in a supermarket for half the price? It's for a trip to Norway so not really practical to go the home made route .

Better for you in which way? Does it matter overly much?

I mean if you planning on eating them as ride snacks then who cares? Unless you really want/need organic or minimally processed or gluten free then buy the cheapest with the most carbs?

I used to live off Kelloggs Nutri-Grain bars during my Trailquest days. Those plus HiFive energy drink did me fine.

Blocks of butter that's what you need.*

*how serious an effort is this? Do you actually need to worry about it? I like a few different ones but generally pick up what's cheap (avoid warrior protein things, like the plague) . That being said I'm not out for weeks on end living off what I can carry, in which case it's butter.

If its just something to tide you over to dinner, buy whatever you fancy.

If you're not racing and getting a decent breakfast and evening meal, then carry whatever you like to eat and/or can tolerate while riding (as long as its got a decent amount of carbs). For a big trip I wouldn't fill my pockets with some new wonder food that I've not tried before, no matter who recommends it.

nutrition on days out is something a lot of people don't think about.  I try and think about how long I am going to be riding for and how much carbs & fluid I am going to need.  Since I've been doing that I have been able to ride further with better recovery.  For long days out I use SIS beta gel bars along with some normal nut type bar and a sandwich.  They are like eating raw jelly but good with my digestive system.  If I'm out for an hour I'll have a glucose gel and have a 1:0.8 glucose:fructose mix in my bottle (~21g of carb) 800ml that I drink over that hour.

It all depends on the intensity of the exercise as that affects glucose/glycogen usage.  riding with the kids I just take water and normal food.

I normally use Eat Natural etc type bars and they do the job.

But I'll use high energy type food for big efforts, used to buy Clif Shot Bloks but someone shared their Veloforte Energy Chews with me recently, probably the tastiest sport food I've tried!

So I placed an order for chews and a selection box of their bars, just trying to avoid eating them before going out on the bike.

20% off for anyone interested

Tasty energy/sports food is bad energy/sports food.

You want stuff that's palatable but you'd only eat when you really want the benefit. Basically anything you'd be pleased to find in your bag 6 months later but not so pleased you'd go looking for it whilst in the garage.
