Hi all,
hope everyone is coping well at home and even at work.
I'm replacing a set of Ohlins RFX 36 on my 2018 Enduro 29 S works and want some Fox 36. There are a few sets online that have decent reductions, but most are 170mm travel.
any enduro 29 users out there (2017 - 2019) that have changed forks?
Should I stick to 160mm travel and what about offset?
51mm vs 44mm?
If I go for 170mm travel will the shorter offset option counteract the increase at all?
Anyone have a useful insight?
With reasonably long and slack bikes I see no downside to short offset forks - they’re more stable at speed and through the rough and better at weighting the front wheel in the turns.
Regarding more fork travel, the extra slackness of the head angle is almost always a good thing but you will raise the BB and slacken the seat angle, both of which are usually a bad thing - so it depends on your likes/dislikes of your current bike.
Can always run a tiny bit more sag and you'll probably not notice the extra 10mm travel.
If you buy a Fox 36 and want to change travel, it's not a big issue, just requires a new air shaft in your chosen travel length, so don't worry too much about hat travel you buy.
As for the offset. Difficult one to answer as I've not owned an Enduro, but on my Evil Offering, a 44mm offset fork has proved a godsend over 51mm.
Personally, I'd probably stick with 160mm on the Enduro, and attempt to lower the ride height somehow with an offset shock bush or a shorter shock on the rear, as the BB is a good 10-12mm taller than I'd want and it could do with a degree off the head angle too... If this was achievable, I'd probably go for a Fox 36 @ 160mm up front with a 44mm offset then too...
Our daughter was competing with a 170mm Ohlins fork on her Enduro 29er. She was in Spain when the message went out about not using them and swapped to a 170mm Lyrik as that was what was available at the time. The forks were checked a couple of weeks later and rebuilt and fitted by Andreani. However she stuck with the Lyriks, the Ohlins were used once in Italy after the rebuild. New uppers and seals and are now at the back of the garage as spares
I'm running her old Enduro with 160mm travel Lyriks
The 170mm slackened the bike a bit for her which is why she prefers them.
We stuck with the same offset on recommendations from some of the team guys who had used both to compete with
I would say, it doesnt matter & pick the one you can get the best deal on.
When most journalists (some of whom are accomplished bike riders) who have tested them for a difference back to back either can't, or can only detect minimal oddities, then for 99% of people if you didn't tell them what they had, they wouldn't have a clue.
Personally I have 2 sets of 36's, one 51mm & one 44mm. I can't tell you which is which, I can't even tell you what I have on my bike at the moment. I can't tell any difference, at all.
Have been running 170mm Lyriks on my enduro for over a year now, previously had 160mm ohlins coils.
Axle to crown between the Fox, Ohlins and Rockshox are all similar from memory (Ohlins looks like its short, but thats just the really low fork arch).
Fox and Rockshox are easier to setup than the ohlins. Rockshox will always be plusher off the top, not a lot to pick between them.
The offset thing? Seems the majority of the industry doesn't understand it. Have ridden 46 & 51 on the same bike, couldn't tell the difference. Found the snippet below on the Mojo page when they were talking about the MORC crowns, food for though and at some point when I'm near a CAD workstation will have a doodle and make a model.

Thanks for everyone's input.
I'm inclined to stay at 160mm and try 44mm offset for a change that I may/may not even notice!
Hi
I've also got a Specialized Enduro Elite Carbon 2018 with the Ohlins RFX36 air fork on there. Just interested as to why you are looking to change the fork- more sensitivity? I do find it a bit harsh for the small chatter stuff etc but ut does do the job on the majority of stuff, if not a super plush magic carpet ride?
TIA!
Paul
