Hi
Currently running a dhf 2.5 however after 2 years it's ready for the bin
I've tried a vigilante 2.6 and I didn't like it, didn't seem to have the same grip on wer roots however it did seem to roll faster so I wonder if the compound is harder.
I do like the 2.5 DHF however I loved the extra small bump compliance of the 2.6 so I'm considering a 2.6 in the DHF exo+ or the magic mary 2.6
Basically I ride everything so the tyre needs to ok at everything including the road!
Any thoughts?
Thanks
I've never used a DHF other than a 2.3 EXO, so can't compare, but 2.6 Mary is a phenomenal front tyre, it's excellent on everything bar trail centre whin dust tracks.
Have you considered using an Assegai on the front, similar to the Magic Mary in the range of conditions it works. Feels a bit better on rockier stuff and roots IMO
Is the ass-guy 2.5 only? Is it any good in the exo+ as the positive reviews seem to be for the max grip version?
Hows the magic mary no good at trail centres?
Riding a MM 2.6 wide up front and it’s awesome. Good match with the DHR II on the rear. Tried a Shorty which many friends favour but wasn’t convinced and returned to MM.
I've got MM 2.6s in 27.5 and 29 and they are very grippy. You will need 35mm inner rims to get the best out of them.
I've also got DHFs in 27.5 2.6, and they are a bit smaller in width and volume than the MM 2.6.The EXO+ carcuss is a bit stiffer than EXO which is worth noting.
I'm trying a 2.5 Assegai 29 Maxx Grip next. Should be arriving today.
Hows the magic mary no good at trail centres?
Big, wide spaced square edge knobs don't work well on kitty litter in my experience, but it's not what it's for, and I very, very rarely ride trail centres, so it's not an issue. On the odd occasion I go to the likes of GT or Ae etc, I only really use the TC climbs, and descend off piste stuff.
Why would you want exo for enduro. Go DD or go home (with a puncture) 😀
You will need 35mm inner rims to get the best out of them.
I'd disagree, like pretty much all 2.6 tyres, it doesn't actually come up at 2.6, and is brilliant on my 29mm internal rim, has a lovely rounded profile.
Running 31mm internal.
DD is overkill for me especially on the front. I'd consider it on the back tyre but that's a different conversation
So if the MM isn't great on trail centres then what is?
I can’t comment on e 2.6/29er versions but I run both the 2.5DHF wt and the 2.3 Magic Mary in exo and snakeskin compounds respectively. The Mary isn’t much smaller then the DHF - I’ve run both on 25 and 30mm inner rim widths.
I tend to run the Mary as a Winter Thre and the DHf as a summer tyre. They’re both ‘allrounder so but the Mary is better when the ground is wetter / looser and the DHF is better on hardpack trail centres.
So if you use your bike in a lot of trail centres and the road I’d go DHF for sure.
I’ve also recently used a 2.6 Specialized Hillbilly as I wanted a new Magic Mary (so I had one for both bikes) but the Hillbilly was half price so thought I’d try it. I’d say it was a touch bigger than the 2.5 DHF - but not a lot. It was similar to the Magic Mary in natural muddy stuff but I’d say it didn’t give me quite as much confidence on wet hardpack as the Mary did (or the DHF).
Depending what you’re riding I’d also consider the Assegai and the Wild Enduro.

The Mary isn’t much smaller then the DHF – I’ve run both on 25 and 30mm inner rim widths.
I just fitted a 2.35 Mary (first time in years using a Schwalbe tyre) and was realy surprised how skinny it looks, I always remembered 235 Schwalbes being really wide, but it's noticeably small compared to the 2.5 DHF.
Assegai is a great tyre up front.
Which flavour ass guy are people using though?
2.5 3c Exo MaxxTerra Assegai for me, but not that rocky in these parts.
Spotted this the other day, didn't know 2.6 assegai existed!
Can't offer any help on the tyres you ask about though, I am running a 2.5 WTB Verdict up front and it's a beast, much wider than the 2.6 Hillbilly I had before, and overall I am really happy with it, a definite step up over the hillbilly.
Bigmantrails that might be a game changer thanks.
How does the assegai roll on the road?
cookci
How does the assegai roll on the road?
About halfway between a DHF and a bucket of tar
I've gone for the 2.5 WT 3C Maxxgrip DD Assegai - I like soft compounds up front. My MMs are both the orange ones
@NoBeerInTheFridge - I've been running the 2.6 MM and HD combo on 29mm inner rims and found they roll and squirm too much for me. I also have the MM and HD in 27.5 on 35mm inner rims and they didn't do this in my experience.
Fair enough, in 650b at 15psi I haven't experienced that.
The 2.5 DHF appears to have bigger knobs than the 2.6 DHF, other than that they look a very similar size.
I'm going to give the 2.6 assegai a shot
I know it's a front tyre, but be aware of how draggy the Assegai is. I have the 2.5 wt exo+ maxterra and you can certainly feel it. The DD maxxgrip must be a lot worse! I'm only using for alpine uplifted holidays
I've been running the 2.6 maxterra assguy on the front for 2 rides now, one very wet deep mud ride and one quite wet bit of everything ride.
I'm a big fan of the DHF but I'd say the Assguy does everything minus on road rolling resistance better
Although to be honest I dont think the rolling resistance is that bad either, its ever so slightly worse than a 2.5 dhf max terra, on the trail I'd say it probably rolls better due to the increased volume
So far its exactly what I was looking for and I havent seen a hint of unpredictability yet unlike the 2.6 vigilante. Let's see how it performs when its bone dry next
