Need a long-sleeved merino top but don't want to pay a fortune. Anyone rate the Endura merino tops? Do they do different ranges? Needs to be comfortable and effective for all-day winter rides in the worst/coldest/wettest UK weather. Ta.
last week in my local Aldi they were doing Merino baselayers for £15. Don't know how long they'll be there but probably worth a look for that price...
I wash mine as infrequently as possible, and when I do it's with woolen handwash stuff, and they last well.
I do have a habit of laddering them, one sleeve has a ladder from elbow to wrist, and the other has a smaller ladder on the front. They are about 3 years old though.
They just do the BaaBaa I think. It's ok - not the best for durability, they rip pretty easily. But aside from that they wash well and don't get too stinky. I have a couple that have been in use for several years on the bike commute.
I bought a sale Patagonia part merino part nylon base (I think, it may actually have been bamboo) last year, It's been amazing, it's very light but also warm, will be looking for more of those this year.
I think merino is overrated, my cheapo man-made material Decathlon bases are better than my merino ones. (Helly Hansen, on-one and some other brand)

Yep just bought a new one for this winter 4.95 euros from Decathlon, comfy and warm .
I've been heavily used my Merino LS base layer for almost a year. Recommended, for sure! It still looks good, no tears or shrinkage or stretching, despite loads of washings (most of the time normal washing detergents, sometimes Nikwax stuff, but never any fabric conditioners).
It's very warm. It works fantastically on its own in temps between 10-18° (anything over and it feels too hot for me...), putting my LS autumn jersey allows me to ride comfortably in anything down to 0° (if not rainy and windy). Pairing it with my wind/waterproof softshell jacket and I rode in the most horrendous weather last winter no problem!
During harder workouts the top goes wet quite quickly (especially under the windproof stuff), but it does keep me warm and comfortable. It is water repellent to some degree (you can see the droplets sitting on it during a foggy rides). But it's still wool - it sucks a lot of water in and becomes heavy 😉
Mine are OK I give them 7/10. In fact 7/10 for merino in general it's better than low quality synthetics but high quality synthetics are better than merino
on-one are good for merino at reasonable money. may be worth looking whether sport pursuit have any factory outlet deals at the moment on baselayers.
yes, my Endura Baabaa Merino is heading into its third winter and still in shape. Few threads pulled here and there, but it has been battered out on the trails. Warm as you like with good ventilation.
I have not found synthetics that perform better than merino for warmth, quick drying and low sweat. Not to mention no stink!
I got a roll neck (neck zip) version from TK Maxx for £20. Not sure if there's any left now but it's brilliant!
I've got a Baabaa and an Icebreaker. Full price (which I didn't pay) the Icebreaker is twice the price. There's not that much in it though - the Icebreaker feels nicer but both do as good a job and you can't tell the difference once they are on.
Cheers all.
rocketman - cheers, what are some high quality synthetics? I like merino but it does get heavy and cold once the back is wet from sweat, I find. Interested in alternatives.
I like Merino. Found the BaaBaa much too itchy though.
The advantage of Merino for me is it doesn't smell even after more than one ride! I have stopped using a backpack now and find that it's the ideal garment to wear under a jersey for all but the warmest days. I wear a Paramo over the head jacket with my merino top for all but the wettest and coldest of days. Add a Buff for more flexibility. Good even for Scottish mountain use.
