I'm gearbox curious, and gearhub curious, but my curiosity has been somewhat lessened by the new issues they bring

Effigear seem to have solved some of these though:

> They work with standard Sram shifters
> Much quicker engagement than the Pinion
> Lighter than at least some of the Pinions

There's not a great deal of info on the forums about these -- anyone got one?

I did read that first, not much specific talk of the Effigear thing, and some of it was confusing the old version with the newer Mimic thing, which has the same mounting pattern as the Pinion and a concentric driveshaft and crank axle

I believe Starling stopped making their Effigear bike, the Spur, because of the failure rate.

Nicolai used to do a version of the Ion 20 with an effigear box, but they stopped as they said the quality of the gearboxes wasn't up to their standards. That was the older style, not the newer one that looks more like a pinion.

Dream bike material...

The dream is probably better than the reality though.

I was optimistic about Effigear but they seem to have almost vanished. There must be a reason for that.

The Effigear website says that it has a 5 year parts and labour guarantee. Better than ebike motors 🤔

have a look at the AstonMtb Review of the Starling GBox bike - it puts into video a lot of the issue that are described in the Starling release mentioned above.

Bottom line is that it's close but not there yet.

But a lot worse than the rohloff guarentee

But a Rohloff isn't a gearbox and you don't see them on mountain bikes so they're not really comparable.

If its not a gearbox what is it?  14 gears inside a box.  they are seen on MTBs as well.  they can even be midmounted if you want

It's in a hub, so it's a gearhub, which functions as a gearbox. Honestly, transmission is a much better generic term.

Yep very nearly went for one when they were a thing. Ummed and ahhed about it for a while and figured I'd be better off replacing my trail bike at the time which gets used a lot more, then obviously they stopped doing them. Maybe I dodged a bullet. There's occasional rumours they have something in the pipeline, possibly more of a derailleur in a box kinda deal.

I thought the Rolhoff was only 2 years?

Well whaddayaknow I just googled it...

The warranty over the reliability and trouble-free functionality of the SPEEDHUB 500/14 is valid for the duration of two years from the original date of purchase. Excluded from this warranty are components subject to normal wear and tear through correct, normal operation of the transmission.

Two year warranty on a £1300+ hub that will give you the heaviest rear wheel you've ever seen and ruin the handling of any bike you fit it too.

I'm oot.
