Trying to do what I thought would be reasonably straight forward. Basically, I have a course I like saved but want to add a bit to it, I'd like to do this without changing the original and also without having to replot it all as a new route.
Have I missed something obvious or is this as difficult as I fear?
Don't think that's possible - no replicate/copy or "Save as" option.
Why not use Basecamp?
Yup, impossible from what I've seen
Possible (as in I just did it), with a small caveat*.
First you need to export the course using this bookmarklet, then rename it to <something>.gpx, import it in the Activities section, then in the newly created activity use the "Save as Course" option in the gear menu at the top right. Delete the temporary activity from both Connect and *Strava ;).
The newly created course will be a copy of the old one and can be edited freely.
otsdr, you my boy are a genius, that has worked a treat, thank you.
