I'd like to start doing the odd commute by bike, thing is I work in Glasgow and live in Edinburgh. Bit to far to do the whole thing each day, but seems I can ride along the Union canal to Uphall then get the train.... Anyone do this or anything similar?
do it the other way, get on the train when its quiet, get off the train at required distance and ride in.
And the union canal is awful.
I would be more inclined to do the commute on the way home to Edinburgh with the prevailing wind. If you follow the route of the Airdrie to Bathgate train line there are a few bail out options along the way!
I used to get the train through, then get off and ride along the canal from either Falkirk or linlithgow, plus the occasional road ride all the way along the a89.
+1 for avoiding the Union Canal. Much of it is muddy and poorly drained. Most of the many bridges involve blind bends. The Forth and Clyde is far nicer. The A89 sounds like a good suggestion. I only know the road from Airdrie to Glasgow but that end is a good cycling road.
