My sister is looking to get a bike through bike to work and these look pretty good value but what do they ride like? The alternative looks like being a Trek from Alpine Bikes as she can go to the Inners branch pretty easily.

She won't be doing anything overly technical so that shouldn't be as much of an issue.

My mate works in the Edinburgh store. He says they do sell well and are pretty good bikes. Is it Merida who is doing the frames for them? However he rates Boardman bikes higher.
The frame looks very similar to the Merida HFS range, the frames were not the lightest but supper stiff so Cynic-Al might be right with the ride being unforgiving 😉
The Trek will probably have lower spec for the money so a test ride would be probably best to buy a bike that fits her better.

Hey Mark. Yes, but I had to adjust the plan a bit. I'll update my thread in a sec as I just got up after work.
I had great fun when I was riding them (I'm one of the ugly people riding them in the last summer catalogue) Yes they are pretty stiff - they are more of a trail centre hardtail, rather than an XC race hardtail. Pretty upright position, nice wide bars - good fun.
Origin depends on the model, some of the range is made by Merida as stated above, some of them are made elsewhere.
Whoosh, thud. Got ya 😉 Upright sounds good. I reckon if it gets any off road use it'll be on blue graded stuff. Might pop into Alpine Bikes this week as I'm in Inners for the weekend.
I think Rob's got one and it get's a lot of use. I'm a bike snob so wouldn't get it but I'm sure it's probably a pretty decent bike in all fairness.
Thankyou Paul - quite like my '08, enough to replace the fork when it died rather than get a new bike... Been round a lot of the usual stuff (Inners, GT red, black & blue, occasional Pentlands jaunts 🙂 ) without complaint. Would assume the new frame to be an improvement in some way. Can't get anything bigger than a 2.2 in the back though....

Was going to ask you what you had Rob. Looks like we are going for a looksee on Thurs. As much as I dislike the place, they have a good selection and she is going to need a helmet and ladies saddle too.
