And how often do you rotate them ? I have a Vitus E-Sommet on order which has an SLX cassette and a KMC X11E ebike specific chain. So not an expensive cassette but I'd still like to get max value given how ebikes are supposed to wear drivetrains - two chains or three?

One. Change it when it needs it. And on that day the bike gets something shiny and new.

Is that ebike specific advice Nick?

I'm still on original chain, cassette and front sprocket (bosch motor scott e-genius), done 4500+ miles and the rear sprocket looks like a throwing star so i guess i'd better renew the drivetrain before i head up to Aviemore next month

I've got a specialized Levo. I think the problem with people burning through chains is the fact you strain the chain a lot more by using a harder gear when climbing. Use the gears like a non electric mtb and the chain should last just as long as a normal bike.

I could be wrong. I am not a trained ebike tester, but it does seem easy to rely on the motor and launch yourself up a climb in a gear you would never use on a normal bike.

Just buy a chain checker & replace chain on 0.5 wear rather than 0.75

Currently up to 521 miles on an E-sommet - using Squirt every ride and up to 20%wear on a Park Tool chain tool in soft muddy conditions.

Dark Peak grit would be a different matter.

Definetly a case of putting a bit of effort into maintaining an ebike drivetrain.

E-sommet is an absolutely stunning bike!!!!!

Not a bad shout RD, ta.

Thanks mundies. Have used squirt for a few years and really liked it but on Smooth now which is even better, give it a go.

Anyway, give us a mini e-sommet review while I'm waiting for mine then!

On Mrs M’s Bosch powered unit I find the front sprocket requires changing when the chain is worn rather than the cassette.
