Went out for a 75 mins ride with a mate today, i was on the Whyte G-160, he was on the Liv Embolden E+ with power !.

He's an ex roadie so he has ridden bikes plenty, but not so much for a fair while apart from the odd pootle down the canal etc.
It was very very interesting for me. GP was trying not to use the power and using his legs as and when, so was good to compare where the Ebike and the clockwork bike compare and how they do so together. I took some trails that were narrow and plant lined, some that were uphill and gravelly and some that were flat and relaxing.

The ebike and GP did really well i thought, apart from certain trails where experience and practice play a part, he was there happily scooting along on my tail, when i upped the pace he wasn't quite there, but i've been doing this a lot and a long time.

But, when he then caught back up, he wasn't dead, he wasn't panting like a rabid dog, he was working, but more importantly he was smiling and happy and very much enjoying it.

For me it was the sort of riding i really enjoy, views, fields, rabbits, red kites, the cake and coffee too. Whilst i love the trailcenter stuff, the between trees, round tight bends, jumps, drops and powering along, i also love the rides of seclusion, the rides of peace, tranquility and finding the peace of mind. I also love the fact you can ride along with a mate and chat random bollox which obviously you can't exactly do on a motorbike (unless you both have compatible comms kit of course)

What i liked was that it wasn't an issue either way for us, we both seemed to enjoy things, both seemed happy and the Ebike gives the levels of power and ability to allow that 🙂

I forgot the pic of the Scotch Egg i had, along with the sausage roll he had... They were eaten too quickly for pics 🙂 It was the first time i've 'eaten out' in about 3 months, lol, first non-home coffee and despite having a Nespresso thing at home, this was a spectacular lunch out for me... just great. Was a shame we couldn't visit West Berkshire Brewery as well... But that's the world we're living in at the moment.

I saw 2 ebikers during the week . They were riding up a big hill chatting as I was going down.

Turns out I was going the wrong way so had to go back up the big hill.
My fat bike still has a granny ring that I have to shift to by hand and a 46 t on the back.

I couldn’t get up the hill, they did it chatting.

It was refreshing to see an ebike being ridden to do something that a normal bike can’t do .

I’ll buy one when I’m 60.

You see, I'd formed the opinion that you were okay - you seem like a sensible and likeable chap from your posting on here.

But now you made me hate you...

Your post makes no sense, mainly as I don't have a scooby who GP is. Can you enlighten me?

You seem to have a thing about starting pointless ebike threads.
No one cares out there on the trails.🤷
Rode mine today for the first time since lockdown. Chatted to a small group of riders to ask directions to a trail. No one made any comments about what anyone else was riding, just smiles, laughs, banter and directions then back to riding.
Just doesn't get mentioned which ever type of bike I'm on when out.

Not pointless for me - I was interested in this thread as I'm out with a mate for the first time with one manual (me) and one emtb (mate) next week, and keen to read about others' experience.

Also confused about wtf GP is though.

You'll both have a laugh as you're mates and you're riding together.😎
Unless one of you is a misserable bugger or you don't really like each other.😲

I thought it had merit, I found it interesting as I've only been out with another mate before at trail centers like Sherwood Pines where it was a lot tougher to stay with him, well, impossible actually. So was nice to see that both can actually bring 2 mates riding with completely different fitness and skillset.

Absolutely disagree. I've known plenty of people who wouldn't last a mile before puking in the bushes.

I've got plenty of mates who are great riders, but this isn't about them. The mate could easily be someone's wife, brother or even son. Just someone who's not into regular exercise but wants to get out and ride, but not necessarily starting from scratch as it's sod all fun when you're walking up the hill pushing a bike as you can't breathe

If they're that un used of exercise theres isn't going to be much fun whatever they're riding.

For interest here's his view

I thoroughly enjoyed it 😀
We did around 12 miles pretty much all off road as Weeksy described. That part of Berkshire is a beautiful part of the world and Weeksy seems to know every rut on the trails we were riding. Weeksy's pace on the tighter trails was faster than I was comfortable with at first but as I got used the weight and balance of the eMTB I was much happier.
First thing to say is that there was no way in hell that I could have done that ride without e- assistance. Weeksy works his arse off to achieve the level of fitness he has and I was amazed the pace he kept up the climbs.
I tried to use as little assistance as possible so I could give my legs a work out and try and measure what the potential range might be. Its a ****ing heavy thing and going up a slight incline, I found level 1 (of 5) felt like it was compensating for the extra 12-13kgs over a pedal powered version.
Level 2 made the difference between the pace I would be comfortable with and the pace Weeksy was pedaling up those slopes.
Level 3 on a steep climb meant I could keep up without really blowing hard. level 4 and 5 are just for a laugh I reckon - its fun changing up through the gears accelerating up a steep section :).
The bike showed 5 LEDs fully charged and still had 4 lit when we finished. So given that, I reckon a 50-60 mile ride is doable.

The bike was super comfy, big tyres rolling on 27.5 rims and bouncy bits at both ends. Before i got on it, I had a hardtail in mind as being the best solution for the type of riding I'd probably be doing. I'd changed my mind about that in 10 minutes, having FS was just so plush and like Weeksy said, if you've got a motor to push the extra weight along, why not?

So, do I want one? Hell yeah. Will I get one? Yeah 🙂

Thanks to weeksy for the guided tours today and the use of Mrs Weeksys eMTB. Much appreciated

In the recent times , me and Mrs TJ ( not that one, the younger model 🙂 ) had decided to get back on the bikes. Its been nearly 2 years since I injured myself . 15 months of repairs to my leg from a bike incident and then losing my mojo. The furlough thing gave us an incentive to ride again. Mrs TJ hadn't ridden for many years, so there would be a major difference in distance/ ability and speed.
Initially , with her Santa Cruz Julianna , she was working hard, but she aint no fitness queen, who loves celery and being a keep fit fanatic. She is a normal wife, mum and full time worker .
Issues with lockdown, is you can ride your bike with others from the same home. She was 'enjoying' biking again , but was not going to ever get to a level and never had, to ride alongside me. Being the wrong side of the big five -oh , doesnt assist either ( we aint no spring chickens)
So, we ordered a LIV 2019 Valle Pro 1 in XS for her from Pauls. Being vertically challenged , always made bike buying limited. Spesh dont do anything at her size etc, so buying local was awkward. The 2019 bike has a better spec than the 2020, with better forks and XT bits etc for less than the 2 or 3 , as they dont sell the 1 model for 2020.
10 days later, we get a very large and somewhat heavy box arrive by TNT. Stripped out the box and a quick chain degrease, charge and tubeless conversion and we are off.
' I should have done this years ago, its fantastic' The wife quips after the first few miles in. Now, she still wants a work out on this bike. Its not like she wants to hit the 5 lights and just put minimum effort it. No, not at all. She usually sits on no 1 , minimum for spinning away and 2 for climbs etc.
So, what has it meant for us ? Thats it , US !! We can ride out and cover greater distances now, with the ability to go to new places for her, instead of the 12 mile run around we used to routinely 'have' to do. She is trying new trails, with new obstacles, new challenges and I know that she is right behind me, when we are buzzing the trails. The new found speed has given her new confidence to tackle stuff and she is bloody smiling from ear to ear. She gives me a workout on the climbs and keeps me motivated to try and get quicker and increase my fitness. Its also given her new enthusiasm to want to get out and ride . That is just great , for her to say ' lets go !'
Seems there will always be haters on here for EB's , for some odd reason, but for me and the wife, we can do all this together and we are already plotting other rides when the time is right to do them.
On another note, which started all this about 3 years ago. A close friend of mine has had major heart problems for many years and to be unable to ride, bought a Spesh Levo , which has given him the ability to do what has always enjoyed. Thats to get out and ride . He has , as of last year , had a 16mm hole repaired in his heart , after nearly 6 years of NHS too-ing and fro-ing and basically nearly dying. His first request to the specialist was 'when can I ride my bike again ?'
This bike will ease him back into riding 'sensibly' again to allow his heart to recover before he goes on to his normal bikes.
Both me and the wife rides bikes for fun. Thats the objective and it's this bike allows that freedom to do this together.

Weeksy , is that cake from Hampstead Norreys shop near the church , as we are heading that way tomorrow, although not sure its open ?

so ... I've literally just bought a super cute trek powerfly 5 womens in small, for my partner/ son (they're not the she person, BTW....)

without a doubt, THE best view I've bought in years.
the ability for my GF to actuality join me for a decent ride (I'm on a normal bike) and she actuality enjoy it, it's just amazing!

normally I'd get anxious about route choices... "does this have too many hills etc etc", but with her on an e bike we can head anywhere, and I'm chasing HER up hills!

gonna set it up tubeless, and for a dropper to it, but it's GREAT!

@Thrustyjust , we may know each other. I'm pretty sure I know the person with the repaired hole in the heart, if it is who I think it is I used to ride with him Friday evenings at Voda many years ago.

Coincidentally, I had a 31mm hole repaired last November!

My preference is the Pantry in Yattendon usually as the other is a bit too close to home. But my mate was on a bit of a time restriction so made sense. But arguably it's just as good a cafe anyway, just don't always feel like you've earned it as it's not a big enough rude to get there

A mate and his wife went to Rutland Water yesterday so she could test ride an ebike.

She has a range of health conditions, but has managed flat 4-5 mile rides on a normal bike over lockdown.

They did the full 18 mile lap, with her having to wait for him at the top if the hills. He's knackered, she wants an ebike!

Weeksy, I've never been to either though have ridden past them 100s of times. Saddleback Farm, Bucklebury Farm Park and the Blackbird Cafe (by the Bladebone in Chapel Row) are my stop, as well as the Banjo Cycles cafe on a Saturday morning.

Great thread and really sums it up for me. I have today sold my last regular MTB so for me all proper off road stuff will now be on my Spesh Levo SL, till it breaks...and I can then use my Vagabond if I have to while the Spesh is being repaired !

Looking forward to getting back to coaching the kids club once lockdown is lifted - at least I’ll be able to keep up with them now 😀

We were out in the Peak at 6.00am this morning. The bikes allowed us to do in 3 hours what would have normally be a full days ride. Back at the van for 9.00am just as the car parks were getting full. Saw three groups of riders out. All having a blast

The trails were running great after a bit of rain. Looked like it was going to get busy with the amount of cars loaded with bikes that were arriving.

@thrustyjust quite possibly, I definitely remember at least one time we drove out that way rather than riding from Newbury.

Getting back on topic - they're all bikes and if they get more people out riding and allow different abilities to ride together then that's a great thing.

Oh, and cake is good.
