Managed to put a big slit in the wtb verdict that my Whyte came with so now need a new rear tyre.

Does the new tyre need to be ebike specific?

Any 29er recommendations to have a look at.

No need for "specific". But given you have extra power and weight you could opt for a more sturdy tyre that non ebikers would hate to pedal all day. This time of year you could go for a more winter specific like a Minion DHR/DHR in single ply. Great grip, not too heavy.

Look at Maxxis website or Schwalble website for a range of tyres for different riding. But dont pick anything that says race - it will be light and not that puncture resistant.

Er,no. He's alredy split a verdict, last thing he wants is a single ply Maxxis.

Maxxis DRR2 or Assegai in Double Down, Schwalbe Eddy Current would be good. Thicker casing for durability, the weight and stickiness won't be a factor on an Ebike.

I don't ebike, but if I did I'd go straight for a DH casing rear tyre.

Something like a DHR2 or the new Schwalbe Big Betty in a big volume.

Running one of ours with a Butcher Blck Dmnd and an Eliminator Blck Dmnd on the other. Have taken everything been thrown at them including the rocks of Finale and Sospel.
After just over 2 years the Butcher on the rear is getting a bit low on the tread but will get me through the Peak slop for the Winter.

As others say, get as tough as you can, i run a super gravity 2.6 mary on the back of mine, also have a DD shorty and a DD high roller for nicer weather.

the eddy current is also nice, but not my cup of tea just now.

Tracey is that a grid or 2bkiss casing or is it just known as black diamond.

With the DHR2 do I need exo 3c etc ? So many to choose from.

I think I've just been massively unlucky with the verdict.

DH or close casing, with lots of traction.

I would say a 2.4 DHR2 DD or DH casing makes for a good rear tyre on an Eeb. If you already have a WTB and can't cope with different brands, the Verdict is a great front tyre, not so good on the back as it has bugger all braking traction but the 2.4 Judge in tough casing is a monster of a tyre (it's basically a bigger, heavier DHR2).

Eddy Current rear tyre is rubbish in the mud. Specialized tyres are just rubbish full stop.

First time on WTB tyres and to be honest didn't like the feel of them. Couldn't get a good feel on what the front was doing.

Will have a look at the Maxxis dhr then I think.

I've been riding the Butcher blk dmnd 2.6in as a rear on my enduro bike.

It was well draggy at first, although it did get much better as the edges wore slightly.

It's got a lot going for it, BUT I found it cut near the bead a couple of times when I was going full speed on rocky descents. Now I've fitted a Rimpact insert and all is well, but I would not recommend it for an ebike without an insert.

I probably be interested if you were flogging the front Verdict.

Ha ha ha, you have started a what tyre thread. But actually, it is good advice to go for a thick casing, not single ply as I said. DH tyres then 🙂

They have three casings Grid, Grid Trail and BLck Dmnd. The latter is the heaviest and most durable of the three.
Over the last few years we have probably tried most of the tyres out there at some point, most have been given away, sold on or in the garage loft. For grip, durability and cost we keep returning to the Butchers. They may not be everyone's cup of tea but for us they work.
We still have one Enduro, which doesn't get ridden much, fitted with Minions front and rear that still need swapping out as I don't think they are as good for me but like everything else its just getting round to it.
We aren't running inserts in any of the bikes.

Eddy Current is rubbish in the FoD right now; the stiff sidewalls offer no compliance over wet roots, even at 14PSI and the tread design clogs really badly. Mate has a Big Betty and reckons it's much better. I don't like the EC in any conditions TBH, but I got stuck with it after an incident at CyB left me tyreless.

I'm currently running a 2.6 e-Wild on the rear, but I'll probably swap it out for a 2.8 Magic Mary soon.

Magic Mary on the front works well all year round.

Yep, MM up front all year round. I’ve moved from an Eddie current rear that didn’t inspire me to an e-wild which is running well so far, but there are horror stories of sidewall spilts being banded about. We’ve found the std spesch tyres to be fine if your a lighter weight rider, whereas I Had to run them so hard to stop rim hits, they were too stiff. M8 fitted a new butcher up front as last weekend (supplied free with a rim), & struggled with it in the wyre mud, while my MM was great & has done 2k miles

I had a 2.6 Michelin E-Wild on the back, wore it out without a single puncture. Now on a Vittoria Martello, think its the enduro, the heavier model anyway. Like that a lot but it's getting overwhelmed by the slop now so half on the look out for something better in mud. Doesn't matter so much on an ebike though, the sliding is fun! (Awaits crucifixion...)

Also 3rd a MM on the front year round. 2.6 though, don't like 2.8s at all

Definitely go for a really strong sidewall. I’d be tempted to try a Schwalbe Big Betty in Super Gravity or a wt DHR2 in downhill casing

Michelin Wild-Enduro Rear 2.4 has been brilliant on the back of my Levo. It’s lasted over 4000km through lockdown and all types of trails. I’ve only just changed it for a new one.

Another emphatic vote for the butcher black diamond (29x2.6) doesn't roll the best but literally every other tyre I've used has failed in one way or another from tearing the bead off to stretching parts of the sidewalls and developing wobbles(looking at you maxxis👀)
Ride in the peaks/lakes/dales predominantly.

Been on a front Eddy current on the rear for a few months now
It’s a beast of a tyre
Braking grip is mental
WTB verdict wet up front which I was trying to find another but the prices have jumped from £33 what I paid to £55

Cheers for all the advice.

As I had a DHR2 on the rear of my Hightower I've gone for another one of those with the aspiration of fitting an Assegai up front.
