As the title really, if you have an eBike do you ever ride a normal bike?
Yes. I have one e-bike and six normal ones. Each one gets ridden as much as the others
E-Bike for pre work spins - generally on steep trails as they are close to work so E-bike is perfect to get you to the top quickly.
Normal bikes for everything else.
Yes,
E bike got me my mojo back and now ride e and non e regularly
Although I can see E bike being used more just for allotment runs as I build up miles on the road bike
It just works well for that sort of job
Yep, i prob spend most of my time on the e mtb but the others get used pretty much every month
I have the following
1 E-MTB
1 MTB
2 Road bikes
1 BMX
1 Hybrid
Would like to spend more time on the road bike and bmx but im time poor these days so end up grabbing the e-mtb for a quick fun ride
Yes. A shit ton.
I ride multiple bikes pretty much every day. On average I probably ride around 15-25 different bikes a week (not all my bikes, I only have 11) I ride my one Emtb on average 10 times (100miles ish)
Prefer normal bikes handling though despite having pretty much the best handling (and lightest) Enduro E bike currently available. .
yes but only cause i like to call ebikers cheats and other derogatory terms when im not on mine
Yes, 1 ebike, and a cx bike and a chubby bike (29+).
Cx bike doesn’t get much use now, but riding is 50/50 between other 2.
not all my bikes, I only have 11
😳 that’s impressive even by STW standards!
😳 that’s impressive even by STW standards!
Really? I thought that was pretty standard?
I ride my e-bike occasionally, not as much as my other (10) bikes though.
I peaked at 13 including frames not immediately rideable, but I’ve cut right back after accepting I had a problem.
No ebike here though (not for any grand reasons, just don’t own one)
I seem to ride my bikes fairly equally apart from my FS which seems to have been ignored lately. So 1 road, 1HT, 1 HT e-bike ridden evenly, 1 FA hardly ridden at all
Up until the end of last month I'd ridden about 1800 miles this year so far. Only 400 of that on my E Bike, the rest shared between my Frankenbike, 29 and 26 hardtail.
Just remembered. I was without my ebike for 3 months earlier in the year. Rode just as much and didn't actually miss it.
Just got my Decoy this week.
Quite a few ebikes thoughts confirmed in the first four hours:
1. It’s much easier to ride uphill in all modes apart from eco (which makes it feel similar to my Smuggler, surprisingly)
2. It’s a lot slower on most singletrack where above 16mph it’s a big, heavy beast to pedal
3. It’s more planted on technical downhills and just ploughs through.
4. Much harder to manual and bunny hop, suspect this will take a while.
16mph is too low for a performance bike. I wouldn’t want it much faster, but at the least I’d like it to revert to Eco above 16mph where it just about feels the same as a regular bike. I might think about putting the US map on to raise it to 20mph...
EDIT: to actually answer the OP, there’s no way I’d only have an ebike, I love my Smuggler too. Different bike for different experiences, both fun.
There is a mixture of both in the garage and all except my daughters race bike are shared between all the family.
Just call them bikes and don't distinguish between them. Just ride what I fancy but they all put a smile on my face.
Been out in the Peak since early and I can't remember the last time I saw so many out on bikes. Everyone was chatty an smiling no matter what they were riding.
I do think at times some people forget what its all about.
@iamthereserection
1. if this is true you either have incredibly draggy tyres on the Decoy and nowhere near as draggy tyres on the Smuggler or your motor is broken. give it longer than 4 hours and you'll realise Eco only feels subtle because Trail/boost are so obviously powerful. climbing with friends on regular bikes if I'm in eco I barely break sweat while they are clearly trying a lot harder. So much so I tend to switch it off completely most of the time.
2. fit faster rolling tyres and it's nowhere near as bad. but I agree limiting the assistance to 15.5mph is stupid
3. although stability is huge they can still be ridden very playfully (see the point #4). I can't stand just plowing through stuff and if at all possible avoid it.
4. Hopefully you're not a wee guy and bought a large or Xl... long Emtbs are way more work to initiate a manny on or ride playfully. but even if you did the key to manualling/hopping them as well as a regular bike is to preload the bike far harder than you would on a regular bike. Once you learn this it becomes second nature very quickly. At the balance point they're very stable/less twitchy than a regular bike.
Wheelying them gives a bit of an unconnected feeling due to the motor assistance.
Ps. Nu Bike pics please? 😉
"1. It’s much easier to ride uphill in all modes apart from eco (which makes it feel similar to my Smuggler, surprisingly)" can you not adjust the eco mode parameters.mine is in eco 95% of the time and just use trail for a bit of a blast

I think that's just the difference between folk typing on a forum (many of whom barely even ride at all) and actually being out riding.
Pretty much every ride I've ever had has been chatty and smiley (even riding on my own 😉 )
@sofaking. Eco isn't adjustable from the original Shimano STEPS Android App settings.
But new PC App has just been released that appaerntly includes Eco adjustment with smartphone versions on their way shortly.
Shimano aren't great at the software side (eg. compared to Spesh)
ah ok geex. i only have experience with the spesh app, which is pretty adjustable
yep, (*xc bimbler who likes scenery, trees etc etc)
ebike, often switched off a lot if legs/body good, mostly always off on flat/downhill (but on if bad legs/windy/hills and more so once over about 25/30 miles as I'm getting tired then)
2006 orange 5 is the other option (which I still love)
I just pick which I fancy - if I was going cheeky with somewhere new(or known with a lot of stiles) I'd go orange 5 coz it's MUCH easier to lift, long day or new with lots of big hills and limited footpaths - ebike, roll on fazua 15kg 120xc fullsus option

This might be it to be fair

Yes, the rear tyre is 2.8, heavy AF and super soft. I'll stick a smaller DHR on most likely soon.
3. although stability is huge they can still be ridden very playfully (see the point #4). I can’t stand just plowing through stuff and if at all possible avoid it.
Bit of both, for me. Depends on the trail... There's no doubt the bike is still playful
4. Hopefully you’re not a wee guy and bought a large or Xl… long Emtbs are way more work to initiate a manny on or ride playfully.
I sized down from the Smuggler (at least in reach, -20mm) for that reason. I'm 5'11", could have taken the XL but went for the L as the chain stays are longer and the BB is low (esp in low geometry, which is where I prefer it)
Wheelying them gives a bit of an unconnected feeling due to the motor assistance.
Didn't find wheelies much of a problem, except in Boost
Ps. Nu Bike pics please? 😉
I haven't taken any...
Loved it mostly so far. Went out for an hour or so close to home after I'd stuck the sealant in and found myself riding up stuff I've only ever really wanted to ride down. It's going to be a lot of fun 🙂

I'd take a bit more in Eco given a choice and use that mostly, and leave trail about where it is for when I need it. Not sure I'll really use Boost, seems a bit much.
That said, we did two laps yesterday of red/black Hamsterley with a mate, and I stuck it in Boost for the last climb up past Descent (if you know it). It's usually a 1st/2nd gear slog up, but on the Decoy it was a 10mph climb whilst holding a chat the whole way up. Mental, really. I didn't miss the suffering...
Average heart for the whole ride was 152. It wouldn't have been much higher on the Smuggler but it wouldn't have been the same distance in the same time.
I only ride E when in Inners with Geex.
Makes you think doesn't it.😄
I'll also be riding E with Sofaking up there next time we're in Inners.
Hopefully Geex will be able to take a little time off from trolling the haters to show us round again.😎
I have 17 bikes, I ride each and every one every day.
I'm not good to say "I am awesome", that's for others (and, perhaps, Big Hitters) to say.
But I may be.
Apart from the odd bit of mid-ride swapping with the e-curious, I haven’t ridden a normal bike since I got my Levo in December. When I’m on my own I use it on turbo most of the time (I commute every day on it) but when on group rides I’ll ride it unassisted much of the time.
This Thursday’s night ride I turbo’d there, left it off for 95% of the two hour ride (a bit of eco was used near the end of a longer climb) and then turbo’d home - the there and back is off-road and more singletrack than not and on turbo I can even do some of the jumps on the flatter uphills! Almost 70% of the battery remaining when I got home, after almost 3 hours, 16 miles and 2000’ of climbing (it was a fairly relaxed group ride!)
It’s a lot of bike to move around tight turns but otherwise I really like the handling - it’s very calm and stable and carries so much speed, and it gives me the confidence to chuck it about more aggressively. I only really notice the extra weight on longer climbs - it rolls damned fast (my first 29er) and I have the strength to grind it up steep things without the motor (which feels like a good challenge).
I’ve dismantled my other full-sus, swapped my favourite parts onto my Zero AM hardtail and sold the rest. I can’t see me needing a normal full-sus as well as the Levo but the hardtail still has a place (plus I need a back-up bike and one for Mrs Guru to occasionally ride). I’m keen to ride the hardtail again - it felt hilariously light when it was built back up this week (a friend is borrowing it to ride the SDW as his bike was stolen the day before his trip, so I had a midnight spannering session getting it working).
Chiefgroove: ‘hilariously light’
That’s how my surly karate monkey, complete with 29+ tyres, front and rear racks, and normal slx gears/brakes feels after I’ve manoeuvred 2 ebikes to get it out.
Yeah, pretty much 50/50.
FS Turbo Levo and Marin Nailtrail HT. One is big and burly and will go anywhere, the other is lighter and more nimble and will pretty much go anywhere.
Seems to be the sweetspot stable for me at the mo.
ebike - boring xc and smashing out lower quality laps or depths of winter
normal bike - proper riding and mucking about, rides better for me for the way I like to ride
winter was 90-10 in favor of the ebike, summer is now 90-10 in favor of the normal bike
