My Ebike doesn't fit on my current roof rack due to the chunky downtube. The only solution I can see is purchasing a Thule 599 roof rack which only holds the wheels.

Has anyone got one and is it secure enough for a ebike? I can remove my battery which should drop the weight of the bike under 20kg

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with mine on the roof, with the battery out the electrics would be wide open to the elements as well.
I had to go down the tow bar/buzz rack route in the end

I regularly put my Orbea Rise on the car roof with a Thule Upride 599. The M20 sits ‘just’ under the Thule max load of 20kg. Although getting it up there after a ride can be fun if you’re tired 🙂

I have used a trek rail 5 on a 599 with the battery removed (only really used from Falkirk to Keith and back) worst bit was driving into forestry commission car parks (potholes made you aware of bike on roof) Also do agree with lifting bike on roof (can be heavy) regards water on electrics you can get plugs for the battery connections on the bike. but overall seems up to job.

Yep, my XL trek rail goes on a 599. Bang on the weight limit with the battery out.
If it's a long journey then I add a couple of cammed luggage straps around the stem, down to the roof rails. Pull down tight, the suspension travel compression keeps them taught. This triangulates the bike and keeps it very very stable.

As above, lifting on needs care.

But isnt it behind a cover ?, at least mine is. You remove the cover, take the battery out and replace the cover. So its not exactly 'open' to the elements.

But even if you were concerned rain or whatever was getting driven in, you could wrap a bit of polythene around that area and secure it with tape or bungies.

Certainly on the Trek bikes the cover is bolted onto the battery so battery off, cover off.

I bought the Thule 561 fork mount rack to deal with the same issues. Also helpfully lightened my ebike by enough to meet the weight restrictions of the rack. I also bought a plastic cover to cover the battery compartment as well for added weight saving to assist lifting - they be found on eBay for popular models.
