I rode one last night. I still put the same effort in but went faster which enabled me to explore .a new area in the time I was out. Thanks for the loan Lester. Real eye opener

Good fun aren't they.

I've been looking at my heart rate stats for Ebikes rides and non Ebike rides.

Both average and max are higher on the Ebike.

I demo'd one at the FoD event earlier this year, if I lived somewhere where big long rides were worth it I'd consider one, as you say it lets you cover so many more miles, great for big rides in the mountains.

They are great fun - I demo'd a Specialized Vado a little while ago for my 18 mile each way commute, and it cut the time by about 30%. The biggest difference is the ability to travel at 16mph no matter the terrain.

having spent a week with my mates kenevo, I'd say the opposite. to do a big long ride on it, you'd have to spend most of the time running in eco mode which only just makes up for the weight of the frame and drag of the tyres.

2 hrs of smashing up hills as fast as possible and then back down again is where they make sense to me.

This thread might cause a destructive feedback loop in some peoples brains.....actual heads could explode

E-bike are shit.....they're just compensating for a lack of skills....you'd be better off spending the money on a skills course......you should speak to jedi.........."Hi Jedi, that's a nice bike".......WAIT A MINUTE!.........BOOOOOOOOM!

Best thing for me about them for me is that when I'll be looking for somewhere new to live next year the area where I can still commute to work comfortably by bike will have grown. I really like the look of the Orbea Gain, pretty much an ordinary bike but with 250 watts added which would be more than enough for me.

Had a quick go on Saturday. Great fun and one will be purchased when I get a bit older. Happy to pedal for now.

I didn't realise quite how much fun they would be - climbing hills on a 24kg 180mm travel bike, that I'd normally walk on a 13kg bike and coming out of the top grinning, then smashing back down the next hill just as fast as I would on a normal FS. Covered 18 miles and 2500ft in 1hr 30mins, mostly off road - that would be a 2.5hr ride normally. Got my heart rate up and did a bit of sweating, but still fresh at the end of it. Can't wait to get back out on it at the weekend

After a night in Coronary care last year, I've become quite e-bike curious. It appeals as an alternative to sudden death. The thread about adding a mid mounted motor simply muddies the waters as I have numerous bikes that could be converted this way. Sooo convert or buy new?

What did you borrow Tony? The last time we discussed this I said I wanted one, well I bought one, a HT & I changed the short stem & 780mm bars for a 100mm stem & 700mm bars, I'm oldskool til I die me 😉

Went out for nearly 30 miles on Monday, haven't ridden that far for years!

Cheers.

Edit for post above

I would buy a new purpose built bike, I have loads I could convert but decided I wanted shimano steps, in hindsight I should of tried the Brose before I made the decision.

Cheers.

Mrs M tested a few last weekend, & I baggsied a go on a Whyte Highgate, hybrid. It's perfect for around town, making Bristol's hilly bits much less daunting. She finds more than a 15 mile ride exhausting these days (arthritis kicking in) so something with a 50+ mile range looks really inviting. And going up steep hills at 15mph is fun!

You won’t go up steep hills at 15mph AND get a 50 mile range...

You will if you get a Focus with the piggy back battery... speaking from experience 🙂

For a certain demographic of this forum, I found this video quite fun.

I get more of a cardio workout going up hills on my ebike - I've had crap knees since my teens, so going up hill has always been a sitting in the saddle and peddling gently uphill in the lowest gear. My ebike takes the pressure and strain off my knees, so I can pedal like crazy.

I still use my Stumpy for techy stuff though, as it fits me better, its a lot lighter and more nimble. Sadly all e-bikes are slightly on the big size for me (due to having to fit the battery in the frame), and having such a small frame means that the weight of the battery is quite high up.  I love it for exploring bridleways and getting the miles in though.

I'm looking forward to owning one but as a tight northern monkey I hope my mates don't buy them too soon. I can see a tipping point in the near future when I turn up for a ride and the majority have them... I know of one local group of over 50's where this has already happened.

I'm hearing rumours that they are selling 2 to 1, no idea if this is true?

A while ago i was sure that my retirement treat to myself in 20 odd years would be an e bike and i wouldnt touch one before that . Then a couple of months ago i was yomping up that fire road at the golfy for 4 hours to get half hour of descending and i had a realisation that maybe they have their place for this type of riding . if they let you do more of the fun stuff then surely that is a good thing

They've ruined all the Strava segments near me.

That sucks ^^^

I uploaded my first ride, revelled in all the KOM's for a little while then changed it to ebike.

I need to get creating some segments though, as a ride that had 20+, only had one when I swapped it

I've got 2 - a full suspension with 3" tyres, and a hardtail 4" tyres

use them loads, commuting through woods to work, went to llandegla yesterday, got 3 laps of the red route in, about 35 miles all in

half the bikes in the car park were E bikes !

Which is why it seemed VERY weird that the shop had NONE on display at all - I would assume they'll need some pretty soon if they want to stay in business
