Whats the current Ebay best buy for a helmet light (with mounting bits and bobs)?  I'd like something with a longish beam rather than spread out light.

hmm not a lot of suggestions.. I'd suggest a dual light ala the solar storm X2, as it's nice and small but a decent beam reach, but mine is about 3 years old so you'd expect there to be lots of better alternative available by now.. no it seems they just want to add bolted more lights onto the same unit, like the Solarstorm x3 which makes a nice minimal light big and clunky.. I personally do not recommend a the 18650 battery flash lights, yes they were great back in 2006 but now, really there heavy on helmet and difficult to mount low.Otherwise you looking for unit similar to the Magicshine Mj-858, with a single very small headunit.

Either way I'd be buying from Amazon, to get a chance of a  warranty over the chancers on ebay...

Simply though if you want reliable, go spend a little more cash with MTB Batteries, and get a decent unit with great backup.

I'll recommend what I'm using, not all from eBay though I'm afraid -

One of these -

http://kaidomain.com/bike-lights-and-bike-accessories/Bike-Lights/BL2s-2-x-Cree-XM-L2-U3-White-6500K-2-Groups-of-2-to-3-Mode-2200-Lumens-Bike-Light

Shipping took 8 days.

This battery pack -

And a GoPro adapter and GoPro mount for the helmet, think I got the adapter from someone on here, or you can print your own if you have a 3D printer.

I hate to say this, but what you're describing is basically an Exposure Joystick. I'd maybe see if there are any pre-owned ones on eBay - one atm I think, but you could set up an alert and see what comes up. They last for years, are repairable by Exposure if something does go wrong, and just work - the hemet mount is genius, though it could sit a little lower.

Helmet lights and remote battery packs = high faff ime.

Alternatively, I did a search for Joystick clones and came up with this thread on mtbr.com:

http://forums.mtbr.com/lights-night-riding/18650-helmet-lights-quick-release-lezyne-vs-exposure-vs-ituos-1058192.html

Some possibilities there.

You could also consider a Moon vortex / vortex pro. Respectively £28 / £40 based on the ones I’ve bought. 600 / 900 lumens, quite small, go pro or handlebar mounts available, all in one unit, good run times. Also no danger of cheap Chinese exploding batteries.

I did have an Ay Up system with a wide beam on the bars and narrow on my hat and that worked very well but as i've got older and my eyes get worse I'm finding that they are just not bright enough!

The BL 2 looks good, its got the same kind of lens at the AyUp's have.

BL2 works well on the helmet and then use a BT40s on the bars, both in neutral white (4000k)
