your opinions please, if you're selling something on ebay how long should you wait for first contact from the buyer?

I'd expect payment within 12 hrs and if it was going to be longer i'd be expecting an email saying as much, again, within 12 hrs.

When did the winner bid seconds before the end or earlier? Have you sent them an invoice? I usually send an invoice to the buyer within a couple of hours of the auction end and start chasing up after 3-4 days if payment hasn't been recieved.

24 hours. If an auction ends at 10pm its not unreasonable to give someone until the next evening.

I try to end my sales around tea time so most people will have time to respond at night before bed.

i always try to give 24hrs - i'd usually invoice in the morning and like others have said, a direct email the next evening.

That's nice. People don't necessarily centre their lives on eBay though. They may have bid previously and go out.

I think getting shirty in anything under 24 hours is ridiculous. If you're so desperate for the cash eBay is not the place to sell!

A day or so is not unreasonable, depends on value of item. if less than £50 then folk might have more pressing stuff to do such as enjoy the weekend.
For high value stuff I normally contact after a day.
People have more important stuff in their lives than ebay.

I put payment within 24hours on my ad, if they don't pay within that period then I send an invoice although I do tend to send an invoice within 12hours anyway. If I don't get payment within that period then I contact them via direct message. After that second chance and appetite feedback

Who said anything about getting shirty? I was merely expressing my opinion that a serious buyer should respond within 12 hrs either with payment or email saying they'll pay within a reasonable timeframe. if I don't hear from them in around 12 hrs i'll send them a POLITE email asking when I should be expecting payment as someone rightly mentioned - people's live don't revolve around ebay. If I am buying an item and I am bidding on it til the last seconds then I will pay then and there. if I put a speculative bid that wins i'll still check on it around the ending time.

But that applies for sellers as well as buyers - I try to time stuff so I can post it at a convenient time to me if payment is made within say 18 hours.

I've had folk wait a day or so before paying. Give them 48hrs.

Totally agree about sellers, in fact I think it's far more relevant to them - you've chosen when to list something, so then being on holiday is pretty stupid! Buyers don't have a choice!

12hrs just isn't reasonable unless the winner bid right at the end of the auction. They might have place a bid on a Friday then gone away for the weekend and not be able to get in touch until Monday night. During the week 24-48hrs is fair.

Or he/she placed a snipe bid and could be a shift worker who has no access to eBay. What is their feedback?

48 hours here. No point stressing about it.
