looking at some parts on EBay Australia.

Wheels really so a big item!

Anyone bought anything larger from Australia and got an idea of costs?

Duty etc?

Thanks,

Max

For stuff from China I've found about 25% of declared value by the time you've got duty, VAT and 'charges' applied. Then add postage costs.

Used to be 50:50 if things would get assessed - now more like 90% get a charge on them.

this is for new stuff - not sure if 2nd hand makes a difference.

I got some bargain forks (new X Fusion Vengeance coil, £150-odd plus about £50-odd postage, but still a bargain) from Australia earlier this year the seller was good to me and put a relatively low value on them so I didn't actually have to pay any duty. It's all down to what the seller sticks on the customs forms.

I gave up on sending Christmas presents from Oz due to the duty, unless it's a proper bargain or really unique it's generally easier to stick to europe

If the seller was helpful, could they not just list it as a gift. As far as I know gifts do not attract duty of any sort (I might be wrong however). Xmas is coming up right, so it could look legit!

100% wrong I'm afraid. Plenty of tales in expat forums of the embarresment of your family paying to liberate the carefully selected gift they didn't want. Customs Dec's don't half ruin the surprise on Christmas morning

just imported a pair of boots from brisbane. Paid 20% VAT on the cost of the boots, but not the delivery fees.

Not forgetting the £8 fee that the royal mail put on to tell me this

(he did put the proper value of the boots on, rather than the obligatory £5)

Unfortunately they also processed the claim, checked the duty applied for that item and probably had transaction fees on top of that. They need to employ somebody to do all that and the cost of it won't be covered in the postage bit they finally get at the end.

oh i realise, but there's no way to preemptively pay the fee.

Least they're cheaper than UPS, which charged me £30 i think when i got the obligatory singletrack approved titanium safety razor from america
