Sold a nearly new floating rotor on ebay over a month ago and the buyer has just come back to me asking to return it as it’s squealing and doesn't have enough bite. He says that he's taken it to two mechanics and that it’s definitely a defective rotor.

Is this even a thing? He also tried telling me that it only arrived a week ago, but it was actually 5 weeks.

If he were asking after a week, id probably agree, but 5 weeks and goodness knows how much use with sintered pads, means its going to be significantly more used.

Do I refund?

Isn't there a 30 day limit?

As above, wouldn't be surprised if you got some ratty old POS back if you did accept a return.

Did you have a record of delivery?
eBay is chock full of chancers now, and they all know that eBay tends to side with them over "complaints". But if you can prove they're lying over the delivery date, maybe they'll find in your favour...

It's probably less bother to just suck it up and take the return most of the time (assuming they actually send it back)...

If they don't send it back then they won't get a refund. They are likely to win if they raise a case (are they still in the window to do that?) but they will still need to return it and then you have a few days after you receive it to send the refund.

Has he put a "item not as described" claim in?

If so, you're on the end of the poopy stick, and will have to take it back in my experience. Your only options are:

Explain to ebay in scientific terms why he's wrong and your right, but then still lose

Work out a deal between the two of you

ebay will refund you the fee's, but you'll be liable for return postage. This is why I hate ebay as a seller, all the power is in the buyers hands.

That's definitely not a thing. It might have been contaminated and needed cleaning.

Here is my recent dealings with Ebay. https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/ebay-tale-of-woe/

They will deal with this via the same rigid process flow as everything else. If the sellers marks it as defective or something it will default to finding in their favour. You can try to argue your case but i doubt anyone looks at it, the computer says no.

Still worth doing though - what else can you do?

For historical reasons I'm a business seller, so have a no quibble 14 day return policy. On top of that, ebay have a 30 day return policy for defective items from the believed date of receipt. This was posted 1st class on June 4th, so would have been with him by June 9th at the very latest. He has admitted to having had it for 5 weeks, so it's outside both policies. However, if there was a chance that the rotor was defective, I would still have accepted a return, but he's also sadi that he's used it for a few weeks...

It's a floating rotor, so I know they can resonate if the rivets are loose, but this was solid and literally 50-100 dry miles only on a bike used for occasionally towing my daughter in her chariot/bike. The rotor measured 1.8mm on my Verniers, so as new thickness.

I would perhaps try asking him for the written report from the two mechanics

You can report the buyer to eBay. I did this when a buyer started making claims of faulty goods after 5+ weeks. I did it before he opened any claim against me. eBay sided with me.

If its outside the time limit then its tough titties.

Has he started the process yet? If not then instruct him to jog on.
