Evening All,
Gpsies.whateveritusedtobe had a wonderful feature where you could upload a route and edit it quite simply by dragging waypoints to where you wanted them to be. Since its been taken over by Alltrails however I've not been able to successfully edit routes. While there is quite possibly a degree of user error here, whatever chicanery they use for this doesn't seem particularly intuitive so what alternatives are there out there ideally with the snap to route type function that takes some of the ball ache out of it (yes otherwise lovely OSmaps, I'm looking at you...).
Cheers 🙂
Komoot?
Signed up and gave it a try but found the route planning awful.
Its just taken me 40 minutes to painstakingly edit a route using OSMaps when gpsies was so smooth and simple to use. Grumble, grumble...
ridewithgps has a pretty good planner in my experience.
You need to buy the maps/routes/tiles you need but I've created routes with Viewranger to plot routes on OS maps... Though it's a bit of a chore. That said, Viewranger is the absolute dogs for the actual navigation etc.👍
With komoot I find route planning to be ok but changing it on the fly, or it adjusting to you changing your route, can be hit and miss, and frustrating. I tend only to use it on the road as well - off road its route selection is all over the place, but maybe that's inevitable using the open source mapping.
I find Garmin Connect pretty good for route planning.
I use BikeHike.co.uk for planning
Allows Google and OS maps to be viewed side-by-side which is essential round here as the OS mapping is not current. Not tried editing an existing route though.
RideWithGPS works the way you’re describing. Still haven’t found anything else that even comes close.
My one tip is to switch between driving, cycling and walking modes depending on which bit of route you’re tweaking (driving for staying on tarmac, cycling for also allowing cycle paths, and walking for off-road sections).
Try cycle.travel Not perfect particularly as routing comes from OSM which is maintained by the great unwashed (including me) many of who don't get the significance of sticking a stile in the middle of a road!
www.plotaroute.com is (in my opinion) excellent. Only €20 a year to subscribe which I do because I think it's so good, but you can use it for free and it gives 90% of the features and probably 100% of what you'll ever use.
Komoot is fine. You just need to add a couple of points and select "include on route" until it adopts the particular path you want.
