im heading finale tomorrow and flying easyJet.Never taken a bike on a plane before so just after advice on packing.A couple of people have told me that it'll be fine to pack other stuff in the bike box as well as the bike so just thought I'd double check this should be okay with anyone on here as only taking a cabin bag.

any help much appreciated

Went to the Alps last year with easy jet, packed the bike bag out with helmet, cloths etc. All fine as long as its under the weight limit.

So long as you don't take the P then it's usually fine. I'd certainly pack anything (other than batteries) that might, even remotely, be frowned on in hand baggage. A few loosely packed bits of clothing to stop anything rattling and provide a bit of extra padding will be fine.

From their terms and conditions:-

  • No other items can be carried in the bicycle box/bag (i.e. clothing)

So the official answer is no and you should be prepared to be asked to remove it if you are caught. But in reality you should get away with a few bits and bobs unless you take the piss.

Do they ever open bike bag/boxes to check?

I'd go by the weight in the rules.

When I was asked I said there was only the bike, bike stuff like helmet, and rags for padding, ie all my clothes. 🙂

I've had my bike bag opened up and checked in Inverness when getting on an Easyjet internal flight. But to be honest Inverness seems to be an overstaffed airport short of things to do to make themselves look busy who take delight in pushing the term 'jobsworth' to another level.

They certainly get scanned and you might be asked to open the case/box when you go to the outsize baggage desk. They don't like batteries and oil, presumably the latter falls under the security concerns about liquids. All depends how arsey the check-in/security staff are really.

I normally leave the bike stuff with the bike. GPS, saddlebag, tools, helmet shoes, that kind of thing. But cram the box full of stuff, you leave yourself open to a dispute and end up charged for extra hold luggage, with the added difficulty of finding a bag to put it in! I know a lot of people travel with only the bike box, but the potential for that scenario (even if unlikely) is enough for me to pay a few extra quid for the hold luggage.

We went to the alps in july, flew to geneva. We used cardboard boxes and put helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, pump, and a few clothes in and was fine. Had to be less than 32kg, mine came to 27kg. 🙂

The oversize baggage staff are usually airport staff. When I flew with a bike once I had been approved as under 32kg by check-in oversized didn't care, infact they commented on how much was in the bag as a joke. I had stuffed two bikes in the bag though!

Up to the weight nobody gives a ****. That is fact all over the world they have  no idea what bike parts look like

Just don't exceed 32kg which is a manual handling limit

Once left a can of GT85 in there that got binned at oversized scanning. When I pointed out it was going in the same hold as my case where no one would bat an eye at deodorant or shaving foam in a similar can with the same pressure and propellant, he agreed...and apologised as it dropped in the bin.

Oil in a bike box doesn’t fall under the liquid rule as that is for hand luggage only

As above, I've had all sorts in mine, cloths, lights, helmets, shoes, tools, even gels and drinks powder, just keep it under 32kg.

Only ever been opened once, and that was on arrival at Sydney to check it was clean (first thing out was a brand new wheel with a brand new tyre, they didn't check anything else) Only ever used Easyjet Edinburgh-Nice, also going to Finale, and no issues at all.

Manchester Easyjet asked us about oil/GT85 but I conveniently forgot about the little tin of fork spray. Other than that no one seemed to care about contents other than 32kg weight probably because of the self-check self-sticker thing they do these days. Bilbao Easyjet equally indifferent.

However the cheapskates in our group did have the assurance of the more well-turned-out having a hold baggage allowance so they had a ready-made Plan B (which would've cost beer).

Enjoy your trip!

No-one cares. Flown loads of times with EasyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and all they do is weigh the thing and ask if the tyres are deflated. Then direct you off to oversize baggage.

Oversize just scan it through and I've never once been asked about anythig in there, even flying with a Di2 equipped bike (I'd have thought a battery and wires would have set off all sorts of alarms but apparently they know about that).

The bag / box has always had clothes, helmet, shoes, tools and so on in it.
