I read lots on all types of mudguards and it ranged from cheapie a that broke easily to expensive ones that lasted longer but still wernt all that great.
So I decided to make my own with some bits I had lying in the garage for years.
Very effective and won't shatter if I flick a big stone or similar up at it.

Best one I've seen is a full length of guttering from headtube to bb complete with sharp edges 😯

I saw a guy in CyB at christmas who made mudguards out of an old tyre.
It don't matter what their made from as long as they do the job.
Even better when it's free too.

You've put a rear mudguard two foot above the height of the rear wheel? How effective are you finding that?
Seriously though, what are they made of? Looks like ally sheet or something?
I have the Crud ones that have soft rubberised edges so they don't slash me to bits in a crash.
Look good, though as hinted at above there are some sharp looking edges on that front guard that I wouldn't fancy catching.
I've never seen cables so long they have to be run under the downtube before they can go up to the cable guides.
Does it matter where I run the cables on my own bike then?
They are made from guttering so there won't be any slashed legs as they bend.
I would have thought that if you fall from your bike on the trail the last of MY worries would be my mudguards hitting me

I remember a while back on some superscrimpers type programme (maybe superscrimpers) there was some guy with a tasty full carbon Specialized FS bike and he was really chuffed about having made a front guard from a bit of drainpipe cut in half.
Looked utter gash.
I mean I'm all for bodging and I have a chopped up milk carton cable tied to the fork on my hardtail, mucky nutz style and it does the job. But there are limits!

Most people want 'Looks good [i]and[/i] does what it's supposed to' - there are any number of relatively inexpensive things availabel that look better and work better than what you have.
Most of us also choose not to ride round on a bike with the sweepings from the garage floor zip tied to it.

Personally I think they look awful and would not consider making them and putting them on mine but if they work for you fair play. 😀
For most people this cycling thing [i]is [/i]a fashion parade, thats why people on this forum are forever posting pictures of their bikes. Cycling is a fashion business so what a mudguard looks like its doing is more important than what it actually is doing - to most people.
In purely practical terms the front guard is wider than it needs to be and the rear one could be a third of the length you've got there and do the same job - any muck that would hit the rear two thirds of the guard would miss you.

The front one looks ok, but if that is aluminium or similar It's very bad idea to have those rough edges on it.
The rear one looks less good, too high and too long.

Yes, if it could be more effective positioned elsewhere. It needs to much closer to the tyre, At the moment it's only keeping a small strip down the centre of your back un splattered, a sort of reverse Pepé Le Pew effect

Just spotted the gear cables too. Not good, you want to route the cables so that they take the shortest smoothest line. you've added two tight bends where one wider curve would have been better.

Their good and work perfectly. Job done well.
At the end of the day its a homemade mudguard made from bits of plastic and cable ties.......thats not really the most exciting creation in the world - in fact more of a job than a creation. I could post a picture of me cleaning the bathroom on Saturday morning but I dont think people would be interested.
op, you ask for comments, here is my comments:
the front looks like it stops some mud, but also looks quite scary with the wide sharp bits near the legs
the rear looks like it needs mounting "a bit" lower where it will be more effective
give the guy a break -

The front section of drain-pipe/ guttering is an artery-severing, tendon and muscle sheering death trap! One sudden stop on that bike and you're going to be a brilliant toulouse lautrec impersonator.

Yeah looks like it really works well judging by how much mud is on the frame.

im not sure if i like the rear one or the front one the most.
front is much like a standard crud guard without the rubber section towards the headtube
the rear is taking the ass saver concept of saddle attachment, but thinner and longer, like its made from an sks chromoplastic

I worried about that - the black forks brace must hit the 'guard after about 50% travel's been reached.
Provides extra damping! 🙂
Like I say, not mine. I don't use mudguards save for a a55saver on the back. I wouldn't want to use it but it's not really any different to those 'THE' ones I don't reckon. Maybe they sit a bit higher..
Mind you, if you look on the white forks behind you can see it sits within the crown. Unless you are regularly bottoming out your forks (maybe unlikely on most xc rides) then it probably wouldn't be a big problem..
