Hi
What is the easiest way to create routes from scratch for turn by turn navigation on a Garmin Edge 1000? I am not sure if I am better off using Basecamp, Strava Routes, or something else. I am riding paths that are marked on Google maps etc but that I have not ridden before.
Thanks!

If it's a Route and not a Track then you should use the same mapping that's installed on your Garmin or you risk it re-routing you when you load it up.

If your Garmin is plugged into your PC then Basecamp will use the mapping installed on it.

if you have a route plotted in google maps already, this site https://mapstogpx.com/ will convert into a gpx that the garmin can read.

+ 1 for gpsies.com. great site.

easyroute app on iphone is quite good for generating routes without access to a laptop.

I don't create routes very often but would use Scotroutes approach to using the maps already on your Garmin device via Basecamp (I mirror the maps on my Oregon on a SD card in a card reader as this tends to be a bit quicker than reading them off the Garmin).

I've noticed though that Garmin's own Connect website has course plotting tools with the option of using Google Maps, Here Maps or Open Street Maps; you register your device with Garmin Connect and can send created course to it (I've never actually tried this though).

Komoot is really straightforward but.......

It doesn't differentiate between footpaths and bridleways. So it's usefull to have Bing open in one window and komoot in another so you can find the track your looking for.

You have to set actual waypoints not just drag points like you do in Google maps, otherwise the moment you go off course it recalculates to the next actual waypoint. Really annoying if you have a 4 hour ride planned and the only waypoint is the finish....... (Obviously not an issue on the Garmin).

It's mapping isn't perfect, sometimes there'll be tiny breaks in a track so it'll let you go halfway over a hill, but refuse to link to the path coming back down the other side.

My preferred tool is RideWithGPS. Then I have RouteCourse on the Edge, which is set to sync pinned routes from RWGPS.

So I plan the route on RWGPS, mark it as pinned, then go to the Edge and open RouteCourse, tap the route, and presto.
