Have heard there is a rideable track/path all the way from Killearn to the top.
On the OS 1:25,000 there is a track marked which stops on the hill side next to Grouse Butts. Is it this track that continues on? Or is it obvious when you are on it?
Anyone know? Would quite like to head up there and see if there is a rideable route back down via Dumgoyne/Dumfoyn onto the Campsie Dene Road.
Also, anyone tried a through route from Strathblane to Fintry? wondering if this would be possible as long as you kept close to the Ballagan Tops? thought it might be at least partly rideable near the cliff edges or is it all boggy morass?!?
Cheers
Grantus,
It is doable. Only got a 1:50,000 map here but you follow the water board track south out of Killearn, and turn left at High Lettre to begin the climb (there is also a faint single track from the woods to the east of killearn behind 'Auchenibert' and 'Kilmore' which cuts south across the moor to meet this track). You follow the track up until the junction at approx. NS 543 844 where the 1:50K OS map only shows a hairpin. A track actually continues up towards the sadlle between Dumgoyne and Garloch Hill. Once you get up onto that saddle you turn left and follow a quad bike track to the trig point of Earl's Seat. Some of it is pretty steep but can be done if it's dry and you're fit.
I did it last May with a couple of mates and from E's Seat we headed south along the campsies towards Slackdhu (cracking views from the top of the cliffs) via Graham's Cairn before turning back north along the cliff top where there is a faint track (all rideable) which descends steeply to the south of the stream, which you cross near the foot of the descent, to Cantywheery where you can rejoin the water board track. I have photos of the route whaich I can email you if you want.
There is a track from Earl's Seat to Fintry that goes behind the Corrie of Balglass. My mate Sanny has done it recently and hopefully he'll be on here shortly to tell you about it.
Yip landrover track from main road on glasgow side of killearn. Takes you to saddle at back of dumgoyne. 15 min push up to the top then easy cycling from there to earls seat. Back down same route but then cut off the landrover track to go via woods in killearn. Fast but not that technical. Have cyled same route to top then diverted to cliffs and along to blanefield. Good fun coming down from cliffs but journey along the top was rubbish. Total bog/heather clumps. Was spring so might be better at other times of year.
cheers guys.
Pistola, pics would be good mate. Also like the sound of the route through to fintry - potential for a huge day there if you link up with a bit of road to the head of the Carron Valley reservoir to go up Meikle Bin and drop down to Clachan of Campsie - road back to Strathblane
Cheers,
Grant
