Had a brand new X01 setup since the end of last year, not sure how many miles I've done on it but more than a few - it's been flawless until a few days ago when an inner chain plate snapped. Took a link out but must have had the pin position not quite right (or just been unlucky) as a link snapped last night, and I think it was the same spot.
Again, took a link out and joined the chain (now two links down) - all good on last night's ride however the shifting's a bit on the slow side now, the crispness is suddenly gone. Feels like an old/gunked up cable but that's not the cause.
I'm a long-time singlespeeder, this is the first geared MTB I've had in years and years. I've been pleasantly surprised by just how good I've found the Eagle setup (fragile chain aside) but it seems odd that shifting would be so noticeably affected by the chain being shorter than it should be.
Is this just the way it is with Eagle or wide-range 1x generally?
I'll get a new chain on it in the next day or two but I'm curious. Never noticed shifting being affected by a shortened chain on a Shimano 2x setup (on a road bike) before.
I can understand it being fussy, there is a lot going on in a small space and the mech/jockey wheels have a lot of movement to cope with the big difference between 50 and 10 teeth. So, yes, two links IMHO will make a difference. especially at the extremes and less so in the centre.
As an aside, nothing else happened when the chain snapped? Mis aligned mech, something stuck in it restricting movement?
If you've shortened the chain, the B-tension will have changed as the cage will be higher. Set the b-tension again and you should be OK.
Sram recommends setting the b-tension with a FS bike at the sag point due to chain growth/loss so losing a couple of links will be even worse.
Eagle is highly sensitive to correct b-tension.

Unlikely anything else involved in last night's chain snap, was just on the road. Figured when I'd rejoined the chain the other day I'd maybe had it a micron or two out of place and it was maybe weaker as a result.
You are using a joining link arent you?
If not, theres a problem right there because the pins are mushroomed at each end.
