My GX Eagle cassette needs replacing. Looks like I have 3 choices:
- GX Eagle £148
- SLX + microspline hub £80 + £68 = £148 for this time, £80 next time
- no name from ebay £75

The no-name is tempting at half the price of the real deal. Has anyone got any experience of these?

blimey, there's even cheaper ones on ebay, i had no idea - and they have the "coating" (im sure it's not the same). Would be interested to know if they do actually work ok as my go to sunrace 11-42 is now silly money on 10 speed.

they look more like a sunrace rip-off to be honest.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

I can't imagine you'd have much luck getting warranty support when it inevitably fails early.

or go X01 as it'll last 2 or 3 times longer then a GX one

TBH I'd go SLX and Microspline. Did that myself 18 months ago and it's bang on. Cassette prices are so much lower than SRAM and they last great, so for the one off expense, I think it's the smart way for longer term saving. Shifting is bang on.

Buy cheap, buy twice is a great mantra if you can afford to buy once in the first place.

My GX Eagle cassette is coming up to 24m on its third chain, though a change of chain requires reprofiling teeth to not slip. It cost £100 at the time, so not looking forward to replacing it

been using a ztto 11 speed version posh version for a year or so on gravel bike, its ok, has worn well, but shifting isn't as good, using with di2 and gets stuck on a few gears.

I'm not complaining about the longevity of the GX cassette - looking back I bought it in February 2018 and have run it through the winter muck. I'm on my second or third chain but have left this chain a bit too long for the cassette I think.

What are the weights of these options? How much heavier is the cheaper SLX than the GX for example, or does nobody care about weight anymore?

I care about weight - I've put on 5kgs in the last year! Slowly dropping off again.

Weight of a cassette - don't care, it's nowhere near my 5kgs.

Thanks @gkeeffe Presumably they’ve all got similar range so GX is a bit lighter than XT and a bit more expensive, but not radically different in either weight or cost by the look of it.

yeah 10-51 for Shimano 10-52 for sram. I like the spread of the Shimano cassette which is more well-balanced compared to the sram one that has a big jump to the granny gear. other people might like this tho.

I've got a sunrace 12pd cassette. Don't think it was £148, but it was near the £100 mark I think.

Just wanted something that fits on an HG driver but was 12speed as the SX / NX that came on the bike was bobbins.

It looks as though a GX 10-50 can be had for around £130 and weighs around 450g. So a bit lighter and a bit cheaper than XT but 1 tooth smaller at the bottom.

I find myself hardly using the 50t on my GX. I'd love a 10-44/46 that was hard wearing, <£150, and fitted an XD driver

Cassette prices are so much lower than SRAM

Are they really though? People seem to compare the price of GX and SLX as "cheapest quality product lines" sort of thing and yeah SLX is cheaper than GX... but GX is probably actually a little bit better than XT, certainly on weight, and is priced similarly.

(the Microspline freehub's usually heavier, varies from hub to hub so it's sensible to take that into account too. Up to 40g in some cases, usually 10-20g)

I've gone for another SRAM GX as there don't seem to be any SLX in stock anywhere. Not a lot of SRAM either but Biketart claim to have them in stock

I’m in the same boat! GX Cassette is now worn I discovered when swapping to the 4th chain.

Anyone used the sunrace 12speed on xd? I can’t find a reviews apart from it can be a bugger fit.

Cassettes are like unicorn horns at the moment. Anyone used a e13 helix? More than gx but cheaper than xo/xx

I had real issues with the sunrace 12 speed cassettes. XD ones that wouldn’t fit. Some has buckled gears. Then we had a few just snap! I went back to sram cassettes, it just wasn’t worth it.

I use this on my Eagle set up:

https://www.garbaruk.com/12-speed-shimano-hg.html

Light and relatively inexpensive, it’s done over 1000 miles so far with no issues. You could get them from Gonebikingmad but they don’t appear to be in stock so may need to order direct, which is actually what I did…
