After a 3 year absence I've just got back from riding the dyfi again - what a cracking event it is. Great atmosphere, good banter on the climbs, superb descents as ever and friendly marshalls too! The perfect weather helped of course.

I was riding with a group this year so took it pretty easy on the climbs, concentrating more on the DH, although my over the bars crash on the rocks seemed to impress more people than any riding prowess 🙂

Big thanks to all the organisers and volunteers. Respect to the guy on the cross bike too!

Anyone know how the guy who was airlifted out is?

Yes a cracking event with friendly people as well.

I had my fair share of mechanicals/punctures today but still enjoyed it, especially the descents.

Not sure what happened to the person but on of the Marshalls was telling us to take care on the descents as somebody had been hurt on one of them and the air ambulance/helicopter was on its way.

Yeah, great day, if somewhat tiring! I helped stretcher a guy up from the descent after the 2nd visit to the farm. Hope he's OK, he looked quite bad, but he was taken to an ambulance, as opposed to the helevac. Would be good to hear that he's ok!

Great site and set up (Camp Serene)
Rip off food/beer price though! 😕
Marshalls, band, cheerleaders, monkey man, feed station helpers all superb
Great climbs and downhills including the slipping and sliding in the mud
2 punctures and one swollen knee due to the never ending climb(extra loop)
Mind numbing ride back 🙁
Excellant job Dyfi people will be back next year!

Rich

Yeah, had an amazing day, beautiful weather too! A big thanks to the two guys who took the time to help me out after I snapped one of my pedros tyre levers rendering me incapable of removing my tyre!

Just like to say thanks to the organisers for putting on an exellent event , really enjoyed it ,
My only gripe is that the food portions needed to be bigger ,( yes i do need to lose weight, but on my terms)
Cheers to all the marshals , cheer leaders and the band ,
and i wish the guy who was injured a speedy recovery .

cheers Rosie .

we heard from injured riders mate Mark, that the injured rider (also mark) was going to be discharged from hospital this evening, and that he was sore but ok.the main worry at the time was concussion. Hope you feel better soon chap.thanks to everyone that entered this year & to all our marshalls and supporters . the best ever dyfi in my view. well done to all.

Monkey man was probably rather warm in that suit 😉

Yeah, great event summed up by excellent descents and some never ending climbs! Don't think I made the first 200 but glad cause I was pretty ****ed towards the end.

I didn't like that Cafe Seren much either mainly because one of the girls tried to short change me with £20 note before the ride, so I thought no worries, easy mistake. Then the same thing happened with another £20 to my missus while I was riding! 👿 Hmmm.

Anybody hear my 3 yr old son balling his eyes out at the start? Came up to the event to see me off then decided he REALLY didn't want me to ride! 😕 🙂

Just got back now. Stopped over the night to enjoy a few cold ones in Cafe Seren last night.

My first Dyfi so nothing to compare it to but had an excellent time even if I was bringing up the rear and had a couple of loops closed on us. We still did 50K to the forest finish though so didn't miss much.

Mental descents covered in mud after 700 odd riders had been over them in front. LONG yet sustainable climbs (except that bloody technical climb which went on forever. Walk city).

Thanks to all involved. Hopefully fitness will allow me to finish in the bunch next year.

roach, think I saw him, was he on his own bike? I thought "thats exactly how I feel mate!" but had a great day anyway, even if it was nearly 6 hours. Must get fit for hills. Absolutely loved the descents though, hairy but fun.

My 4th Dyfi in a row and even though it was the muddiest I still enjoyed it again. The final climb was littered with people cramping, stretching and stopping for a rest... this truely is a tough enduro, with no time for resting

Well done to Joe, Fraz, Tegid and all who help to make this the best enduro event I take part in every year..

Well that was great, utterly pooped by the end and as i hadnt done it before my tip to myself was next time dont run an old 8spd groupset with a 35-28 as your granny gear!

Otherwise the descents were ace, i was overtaken by loads on the climbs but managed to strive off anyone overtaking me on the downhills which pleased me. Hope all those that grabbed too much front brake on the descents and crashed are ok, there were quite a few that i alone saw.

And why is it that you ride hell for leather downhill all day, but only come off once and its doing one mph in teh biggest pile of wet mud on the course (the very of of the muddy descent, sideways into teh huge puddle!)

Props to the organisers too, great day!

First Dyfi for me and my son
Had a fantastic time absolutely brilliant event
We both did it on rigid single speeds which added to the fun. Had a puncture early on and lost him so was a bit gob smacked to find he finished 30th overall

That was me on the snow tyres. I don't know what place I finished, but I think I took about 3.5 hours.

TBH, it's more fun with clipless pedals, a suspension fork, and normal tyres. But the clown bike did have novelty value and being resigned to a slower time this year I wasn't half as beaten up at the end.

And I bet no-one else had Nick Craig wanting to try their bike after the race 🙂

Aidan

Was that you on that you on the Surly Pugsley snow bike thing?

😮

Had a great event, although it gotta be said the Cotic Soul was on the limit on the descents

Spotted a bloke on a FIXED SS (On One Pompino?) Karazzzzy!

Just got back myself after my first Dyfi. Had a great time and loved the descents, although did have a couple of embarassing over-the-bars incidents! 😳 Also loving the music in Cafe Serene...not sure about Ren & Stimpy in the movie tent last night tho!

Only downside...all that mud has taken it's toll on my 2 week old bottom bracket so gonna have to get another one 🙁

I was riding along with Aidan on his pug near the start. It was quite funny hearing the many comments about his bike on the road section. As usual, he royally kicked my ar$e on that ride. I don't want to even think how much faster he'd have been on his more sensible bike. As usual, great event. Did it have more riders this year? It was pretty impressive seeing everyone on the road roll-out.

My first Dyfi and thought it was excellent! Tougher then i expected to be honest. It may be shorter than events like the Brecon Beast but it was far more demanding both up and down! I'll say sorry now for holding people up on the descents. I was was proper mincing for some reason 🙁

A massive thanks to 'The Holey Trail' for the use of a QR 20mm axle for my Zocchies.

I thought I wasnt riding after forgetting to put mine in the car but a longshot trip to the bike shop paid off.

He wanted a ride on mine, then kindly took it home for me, and best of all when I popped round for it earlier, he'd washed it. What a star.

Yeah Roach I was right by your son, poor little chap wanted his Daddy, First Dyfi said it was my last, i have now changed my mind..somehow forgotten all the pain. Think I will just to the start though so I can knobble those xc whippets who like to push in while waiting for the roll out. 😉

Tracker1972 - Yeah that was him on his scoot along bike.

flippinheckler - Yeah, don't think he has cried so much since we've had him 🙂

Funny how the you seem to forget the memories of the pain. Wonder what logic there is in that.

Think I will keep reminding myself of the Grassy moor section and that mudfest section when my cranks jammed because of the 2lb's of mud I picked up, maybe that will prevent me from entering another silly enduro event.

sorry if my creaky E5 saddle got on anybodies tits...good news was the mud lubed it nicely and it "behaved" from then on, great event, I also flew over the bars at one point and landed on some rocks great gouges out of my butt cheeks...how do I explain that to the mrs?

3rd dyfi, 1st full loop version 🙂
no offs
no punctures
no mechanicals
bit gutted ive got no wounds to pick at!

A lot of people were caning it past people/mincers without a word or waiting for a clear point to pass.
I heard a few "rider"s, which is as useful as a chocolate teapot, and just worries the victim.

more "passing on your left/right"s please!

i saw ure little lad Roach, he wasnt a happy bunny, poor tyke. worried about his old man!

anyone here own up to the toddler who "wanted his kite" at 3am and thought the best way to go about it was some BLATENTLY faked VERY loud "tears"?
ho hum, i wouldnt want the challenge of raising one just yet.

loving the cafe seren here too, cracking setup, and having bought my own booze and food didnt get stung. (but i think the prices looked ok for the post race food?)

most importantly.... 364 days to go!

fugg me that was hard work.............. started way back which maybe wasn't the best tactic for getting a clear run on the singletrack.Saw quite a few bodies, including the guy who got stretchered off - glad he's okay. If I never see another fire foad it will be too soon. Have ridden a lot of that stuff on a motorbike, and wondered what it would be like on an MTB - now i know.............. ups were grim, downs were great but over too soon. Chronic spasms from about in my back from about mile 8 meant I did a fair amount of pushing to stretch - but didn't seem to make much difference. Think time was a very average 4' 45"

great atmosphere, brilliantly organised - but could we have some "along" as well as straight up and straight down?

Errrmmm ands yes I may be guilty of spending a bit longer in the feed station than was strictly necessary...........

Another thank you to the organisers from me.

One of the few events I look forward to each year.

The Merida team could learn a lot about course layout from Tegid and the rest of the crew. 😉

A nice steady ride round for me in a shade over three and a half hours. Plenty of banter on the way round with various different folks. Some of them on bikes even dafter than mine [caugh] Aidan [/caugh]

Great to be able to stop the night after the race and have a few beers too.

My first Dyfi,

Really enjoyed myself and would definately do it again. Bimbled around in a group (but made sure I enjoyed tear-arsing down the hills, tried not to spook anyone though) and thought the setup was great. I didn't bother with the on-site catering after seeing the portions, but made sure I got a slap-up binge at the cafe in town 😉

Loved the Pugsley, and thanks to Aidan and his crew for letting us know we'd left our gloves in the Climacx carpark on Saturday, D'oh! >waves<

The grassy moorland was by far the most evil section of the whole route. The descent off the back of it made it worth it though ! & the mud,well..something else ! I have just about finished cleaning the bike down - a whole litre of muck off later ! 😆

OMG that was hard but what an excellent event again. My legs had totaly given up the ghost by the last climb, might have had something to do with the blood loss from my nose on every climb. Not sure what that was all about I looked like I had been in a fight by the time I had finished . Hope my legs have recoveed my tomorrow as for the rest of the week I am teaching GCSE mountain biking in and north wales.Mental note to self must train more for the next time

Yep, it was Adam that helped out with the gloves. I just brought the "look at me!" bike.

I guess that would have been you on the Jones, then SSStu. It's always nice to get a dose of the Midlands 🙂

The Dyfi is a great event. I've been riding there since the first one and it is a fixture every year. From my first time where I had to push the fire-roads, to the year my knees were just about to be operated on, to last year and my attempt to storm it, the dyfi has always been fun. Scary descents and a carnival atmosphere... unmissable.

So thanks to the people who make it happen: monkeys, brass-bands, cheer-leaders, flap-jack hander-outers, and everyone behind the scenes.

GCSE cycling is part of the PE sylybus I just have to make some adaptations its great for those who are not into the so called regular sports football, rugby etc I can teach in a weeks riding time what a school PE teacher teaches in almost a year most PE students only get 2 hours a week.

numbnuts, I can only hope there are more teachers out there pushing this.

Not everyone thinks spear chucking and jogging / foot and ball are interesting.

I've just never heard of it, despite knowing a few teachers.

top draw indeed!

cxi - my GPS (barometric altimeter) reckoned around 1900m. It normally under-estimates so I reckon it was probably a little bit more.

Either way it was loads 🙂

that was the whole thing from start to finish...

I tell a lie, that no' was from what sporttracks converted the data from what the garmin thought it was, so it my easily be an underestimate (garmin's not the best for calculating elevation). I'll check tonite what memmap thought it was unless someone else has a no' for you..

My (altimeter based) computer recorded 1730m of ascent from the start to the finish in the woods, including the loop.

only bad bit for me was the very very muddy bit through the woods, I could just see it eating through my drivechain, and it was lot of height loss for very little gain.

Its the only bit I don't like, on the course really.

Also whats with people walking the descents (and singletrack rocky climb) and not moving out of the way for people riding it? I ended up following 3 blokes down 1 descent and they would not move out of the way regardless of how many times they were asked. If someone is riding get out of the way

Very frustrating.

@richc - agreed re the walking with bikes.People were all over the place on the trail. On that singletrack rocky climb you are on about it was v difficult to get going again once you had come behind someone who was walking. If you could keep the pedals spinning it wasnt that difficult to ride.Must say though, regarding passing on descents there were many riders who would just be hollering "rider coming through" which doesnt actually help without knowing which side they are on.On highlight for me was on the rocky climb where this very thing happened, the rider was shouting "coming through" to those of us already spinning up the climb. He did barge past us eventually, only for us to round the corner to the dip to find him lying in the side of the trail. 😆 I didn't laugh though,obviously....

I agree they were more muppet descenders this year than I've seen before, if there are a line of riders going down a hill with someone nervously picking there way down, why not wait with everyone else for a safe place to pass rather than screaming 'coming through' and try and barge past everyone.

Stupid thing was some of these muppets weren't even quick as I got stuck behind someone who barged there way through, I waited to overtake someone at a safe point and ended up freewheeling behind the overtaking muppet who couldn't ride for shit. I did laugh at him at the bottom waiting for my missus to catch up when he was bragging to his mates how he 'totaled owned that descent' when I've seen my 2 year old cousin ride with more control/flow.

That muddy descent was great fun - snow boarding on a MTB :). To be honest, that's a great thing about the Dyfi - every descent brings something different and challenging.

And yes the walkers/totterers on the descents were a bit of a pain (that's why I went over the bars on the really steep rocky descent) but all part of the fun of the Dyfi. There's a real buzz from getting past the slower riders safely. And before anyone criticises, I was waiting for openings, shouting clear "on your left/right" and got acknowledgements from nearly all the riders as I over took (all very friendly too). it does seem a shame to spend all that effort climbing up the hills to walk back down again 🙂

I did have to laugh at the top of the last singletrack descent when a lad came screaming past us, skidded round into the singletrack grinning and set off in front of us. I couldn't resist - following behind him with a couple of mates. We caught him by the first corner heckling him with "come on pedal", only for him to wash out. Apparently he got mud in his eye so couldn't take the corner full speed. I think he saw the funny side of it though and admitted he couldn't catch us again 🙂

All good.

this was my first enduro and i'm still not sure if i enjoyed it or not 😕

i usually enjoy the challenge of a climb but these were stupidly long and boring...only one technical climb??
the downs were fun but having to fight my way passed the excessive brakers and being forced into lines that i usually wouldnt choose put a bit of a damper on things.

clocked just over 4 hrs for the full loop and quite happy with that. but wont do it on a 36lbs FR light bike next year!

Ace event as ever.

Regarding the overtaking.
If there was space I would pass and shout which side I was passing.
If there wasn't space I'll happily sit behind. It's not a race after all.

Has to be said, I did not see anyone get held up by anyone pushing a bike.

Was proper muddy though... 😉

Cafe seren whilst not cheap, the Curry on the Sunday night was very nice indeed.

Well I have to say that all of the riders who passed me on the descents gave absolutely no clue as to which direction they were coming from or were going to pass on. You just had to stick to your line and hope that they had a way around you. I was right at the back of the event all day so if they wanted to go faster they should have gone up the bloody hills faster and kept ahead of me. It wasn't a big issue anyway. People ride at different speeds and ability levels, That's half the fun of the events I guess. Just deal with it.

I was a courteous and careful as i could be with my passing (lots of "passing on your right/left"s at appropriate spaces, none of this "RIDER!" crap, which is as good as useless and REALLY gets on my tits.
cant speak for the sharp end of our riders though (they were miles away from the 'fat and slow' team)

Yep, great event, but my worst effort- bit out of practice so not the best for fitness or descending really.

Olly most of the Aber MTB and Ystwyth lot I saw were great. I limped into the finish with a bunch of them demanding that each of their riders DO A WHEELIE at the finish line :D.

While quite a few riders flew past on the descents without warning the only one I remember was in a green t-shirt and y ddraig goch pisspot helmet. I only remember as it was distinctive.

Over £7.00 for a photo, that's gone up a bit (nearly doubled) since last year.

It's a bloody credit crunch how can people justify such a hike in price ? 🙁

Great event as always Fraz and co, well done to the whole team, all the marshalls, and helpers and the local folk who came out to clap us off and back in.... it's a great touch and the locals should be very proud that they host one of the best events in European MTB'ing in my experience.

Single speed matt convinced me to do it single speed and whilst i am perversley happy i did it, i'm pretty goosed now! Unfortunately i had to pass on keeping him company, shredding cli-machx on monday i was down the skinners keeping dry!

Great to see Fraz Jr as well! I've missed her the last couple of years 😥

martyntr,

The main difference with the photos this year is that I am only doing 2 sizes - regular and hi-res, rather than small, medium and large. This is due to a change in the photo sales software I use, not my choice.

The hi-res corresponds to last year's large and costs the same - £7.45

The regular corresponds to last year's medium. As there is no small version available I have actually REDUCED the price of that pic to £4.45 from £4.95 to compensate a bit.

Mates GPS came in at about 9000 feet so 2,700 meters seems ok. Near as damn it killed me anyway, nearly 6 hours it took! Loved the downs, can't ride back up though.
Do the times get published at all?

My Garmin 305 measured 62.10km and 1924m of ascent.

I've no idea if I did the longer or shorter course (I did the loop from and back to the feed station)

Wide variations in measurements...

Great event again.

PS This includes from and back to the campsite.
