Tough tough tough.
Field to field: 38.15 miles 6144 ft of climbing
Did it in 2008 but this year was definitely harder.
Awesome, seat of the pants decents-the drop off the ridgeline was one of the most technical I've ever done.
Honourable mentions:
The Cheerleaders
Bloke blowing chunks at the peak of the moorland climb
Team Cheese
Old fella for pooing in the woods!
The chaps having wine and olives by the trailside towards the end
All the single speeders (you are truly nuts!)
Cannondale tandemers
Did Nick Craig win? He was back at home when I came in.
All the single speeders (you are truly nuts!)
Walking like John Wayne today but thanks 😉
Old fella for pooing in the woods!
that was probably the swede as well given his earlier post
aye that was fun, world cup descent rocked!
Just sorting the photos, which will be available at www.rightplacerighttime.co.uk - maybe tomorrow, or possibly Wednesday - searchable by rider number.
Just looking at the pics, Johnny Pugh was first over the line and Nick Craig was second. If the clock was right on my assistant's camera then they finished at 13.43 and 13.49 respectively. Last finisher, who would have done the shortened course, was at 17.29
That was brutal to say the least, every bit of downhill punished by long fire roads but the world cup decent was the only one i remember out of all the singletracks because it was awsome 🙂
Someone said it was 80% Forest road and 20% singletrack 😯 so in the end i was just happy to finish and start the post ride party last night 8)
Now im off to strip down my bike in an attempt to clean all that mud 🙄

Does this mean you have a GPS track of the route? Mine turned itself off five miles in 😥 . I'd really like to get hold of the route if possible?
The endless fireroad climbs are what kill me about the Dyfi. Especially the evil one right at the end this year. I was impressed by how different the course was to two years ago. Does it always change this much?
ginsterdrz - I didn't get the Lantern Rouge this time, did you? I'm guessing you were somewhere near me if you saw the folks having wine and olives at the end. "Anyone for tapas?" they asked as we went past 🙂
I left the forest at about 16:45.
I was shooting on the WC run and took lots of pics like this one of Nick Craig.
That was taken just above the point it turned into this.
Also shot quite a lot of stuff before the finish like this.
Plus usual finish shots and some other bits and pieces.
(and the reason I'm not currently adding numbers to pics is because I'm waiting for another gallery to upload)

Oi watch it. I'm 34. my mate rosie said he was caught short though. Now that would have been a sight.
Sorry - which bit was the 'world cup' descent then? Was it that mentally steep bit on the ridge?
Hi ginsterdrz and njm, that was Team Tapas nice to meet you both. Olives and charcuterie really are good trail food, you should have tried some. We were going to rendezvous with Team Cheese, but messed it up a bit.
The course did seem climbier than last year, but worth the jumpy/steep/rocky descent (presumably that has something to do with a world cup?)
Yup the world cup descent is the ridgeline descent with a steep finish to fire road which then descended a little further to tarmac road.
Here's a few photos I took whilsdt oing a recce on Friday:
Starts shallow, with lose earth and rock and a couplf of kickers

Then starts to point down a bit steeper:

Photo doesn't do the steepness justice:

I wasn't last either. Not sure what time we left the forest but it was around 5hrs 50mins. My overall was 6:23mins and well chuffed to have just made it round. Bit creaky today though!
Does this mean you have a GPS track of the route? Mine turned itself off five miles in . I'd really like to get hold of the route if possible?
I've got an Edge 305 with the route recorded. Never downloaded a route from it but I'll read up and post it or email to you.
Team Tapas - Top quality and very civilised. Idea forming for next year.....Team Guinness!
vdubber67 - MemberSorry - which bit was the 'world cup' descent then?
That'd be this bit then.

Fantastic descents even if some of them were several trackstands in a row waiting for people and then nicking off past 🙂 Great atmosphere as always and perfect weather and surprisingly pretty much all ridable and pretty dry TBH.
Got back in 4hrs 19mins so await the results.
BTW - You can download my garmin GPS route from Garmin Connect : http://connect.garmin.com/activity/32072358
Thats me at the bottom of the mad descent resplendent in yellow and black.
Wish I had gone down it as quickly as singlespeedstu.
Fraz just mentioned on facebook that Nick Craig had 2 flats and the cuts were just from brambles
Second time doing the enduro, great course really enjoyed the scary downhill, anyone for golf? 😉
time worse than last year as waited at the food station for an age for a rider who had already dropped out! Doh!
singlespeedstu-good elbows my son!!!
My second Dyfi as well - enjoyed it more this year than last - for me, some how it didn't feel as bad as last year despite me being less fit than last year...still finished right at the back as expected tho!
Rightplacerighttime - not sure if was you but I reckon someone got an awesome photo of me on the last descent at the end of the day 8) Looking forward to seeing the gallery later in the week!
Oh yeah...and World Cup Descent was 'rad to the gnar'...just wish I wasn't forced to take a breather half way down after bashing my nuts against the saddle. I'm calling that downhill 'The Nutcraker' from now on 🙂
I'd like to offer apologies to anyone woken by terrible drunken guitar playing on the campsite on saturday night - the pull of the local hostelry proved too much and overwhelmed our resolve/'talent' (thanks Skinner's Arms, friendly locals, fortyniner ale and the 2 Irish riders Mark and Jason who totally outdrank us).
Apologies also to Nick Craig and family who parked their caravan next to us - he said it was unusual to open the curtains on a beautiful sunny morning to be greeted by the sight of a bloke on hands and knees being sick in the grass behind his tent, but was more than willing to take the p1s5 and offer encouragement. ("bad pint, was it?")
Still - hangover from hell, 2 punctures and a crash aside we still went round in under 4.5 hrs. Awesome organization as ever, superb course - the WC descent was nuts! Cheers to all involved - see you next year.
orena45
Often when someone says I must have got an awesome photo of them, it turns out I haven't as they were doing something that I wasn't expecting - however if you can't find your pic when I put the event live, let me know and I'll see if I can find the image of your back wheel or whatever I got in my trash file.
So you won't have taken the picture of me doing a no handed backflip then??
Rightplacerighttime - he he...can't wait 😆
hey bullandbladder i was clearing the camping field this morning, and found your little gift by nick's van, thanks mate!

It was around 5hrs 45mins for me. Our vague notions of a ride today got swiftly abandoned this morning due to creaks 🙂
😀 mint
Thanks to those who posted the various Garmin Connect links - just what I was after. I've got a family holiday planned in the area in July, and wanted to plot out some suitable routes.
Another fantastic course and a great day. Friendly, helpful marshalls, the usual band/cheer-leaders, great food at the feed station and spot on weather, if a little damp under tyre 🙂
By far the hardest year for me but more due to personal reasons than the course. Being close to the back had it's advantages though with a relatively clear run at most of the descents and some (on the whole) great banter 🙂
Bring on 2011
Hmmm, according to my Garmin GPS plot I climbed over 7000m yesterday 😯
NICK CRAIG IN TUBES SCANDAL!
Bl**dy h*ll mate its 2010-get with it-go tubeless.
That's the only advice I'll ever be able to give to the MTB Legend that is Sir Nicholas.
The Dyfi downhills are brutal and I'm not the slickest downhiller but I've managed to do it twice on Stans love juice and none lust Maxxis tyres.
I didn't count but there were loads of unfortunates mending punctures out there AND I didn't see one CO2 pump either-everyone was making like Popeye.
Hey Bullandbladder, i was with the family in the caravan in front of Nick Craig's- just about dropping off when you started "tuning" your guitar..even my teenage daughter found it amusing coz you were so shocking, asked Nick C if it was him the day after, said he didn't hear a thing. Stuff like that make the event for me, not many left with a similar vibe.
Quite a few photos gone up on the Facebook group already - [url=
first time i rode the event. absolutely loved it. really enjoy techy riding and it was some of the best i've ever seen.
that first climb went on forever but felt amazing to climb along the ridge. a guy on a blue orange 5 flew past me on the decent immediately afterwards, was amazed at the speed and control he had but was gutted to see him get a puncture at the bottom. fair play to you if your on here! i noticed how much harder the full sussers were taking the decents. was really impressed.
beer was awesome, bands were awesome, food was awesome. defo on it next year!
edit: how much of the course will be open permanently? can we ride the 'world cup' decent line?
Just plain awesome. I'm bruised and battered but still smiling through the pain. One of the best enduro events out there. Full respect to the cotic riding single speeder from S.Wales who kept up an awesome pace. I just made the cut off and got rewarded with an additional climb!!!!
Rorschach - MemberThe gap jump at the top of the wc descent bit my back wheel!!
This is you isn't it? My bonked brain seems to remember your face! 🙂
pretty tough course great fun though...prob one of the most technical enduros?....I came first in the Newly diagnosed, 40 on the 20th August Diabetic category....nice for the 6 yr old on the finish line to remember this and award me with 3 pairs of socks 😆
Was a great event, don't know about hardest single day event, felt ok at the end compared to the mess I was in after the Builth Wells Merida 100 a few years back (which took me almost 3 hours longer to do the extra 20 miles....), the Dyfi's descents are certainly more technical, the climbs while laborious were not as hard.
I finished that late that I was awarded lights as my spot prize 😀
Really enjoyed it, hardest ride I've ever done, legs still very tight, thought the downhills were superb, really enjoyed the WC descent, didn't realize just how steep it was until I stopped at the bottom and looked back up to the top. Big thanks to Paul and Rosie for dragging me round, pretty sure I would've quit when cramp set in at about half way. great event and big thank you to the organisers and also to the curry house, ate like a horse, food was fantastic and the ride was still calorie neutral 😀
Cycled to work this morning and feel super fit although my legs are still a little achy 🙂
Just like to add my twopenneth....got home last night.
Good Campsite,great ride.
Brilliantly and sadistically marshalled...."this is the last hill"etc
The drummers were my fave.
Hello to Roger - the mature chap with the pakamac, walking boots&socks Plus his rear tyre rubbing on his front mech!
I hope i can go up hills like it when i get older.
Generally good banter all the way round...shame about the litter bugs.
Definitely one for next year.
...when are the results published??
Descents were great fun but I felt like I spent most of the day climbing the same boring fire roads. Need to change my riding position and start doing some lumbar exercises I think. Legs were fine but my back was was in pieces by the end!
Kudos to the guys on the tandem. Nutters!
Second time for me and it was better route this time than a couple of years ago. I missed the cut-off by about 10 riders which was very lucky as I pretty empty by then. I could barely stay on the bike on the last descents as my back and shoulders aching so much. And that last climb was a bitch!
What was the approx time that the cut off closed?
crikey..forgot about the tandem.nice chaps.bonkers.
I was also yo-yoing with a fella on a Merlin - he had smiley stickers
on his pack - thanks for letting me past on the downs.
Also..how sweet was the flapjack?!lovely.
just finished cleaning me bike and my brake cable stay has
worn away/snapped!!!!
Votchy.. thanks for the company 😀 my first Dyfi, what a great event , big cheeers to the marshals n cheerleaders , my bike was definitely under ridered on some off the desents 😳
I'm not sure what time the cut-off closed but the marshall said I was in 260th place and I think it was closed after 250 riders passed through which was a bit close for my liking! I finished at about 3.30ish so I guess it closed at about 3pm, give or take 10 minutes or so.
I did it in 4.19 and was closed when I pitched up - I did see the last few riders doing the extra 3 Km loop at the top of the climb so I reckon it closed around 3.10 if were being anal 😉 so same as above 🙂
that was close i only just missed by a couple of hours
Brilliant event as ever – I think the way the locals get behind the ride makes the Dyfi a true classic.
Not sure if I was riding my bike on the downhill’s or just holding on to it
– apologies to those I was holding up as I cautiously picked my way down. Couldn’t believe some of the speeds people went past me on the descents – bonkers.
Sounds like I too only just missed the cut-off – thank God. Legs felt OK, but the tank was empty by the time I got to the finish. Definitely harder and more technical than the previous 4 Dyfi’s that I’ve done.
Awesome days riding 🙂
Amazing day out. i think it was slightly harder than last year, but including the world cup descent was awesome. as usual, brilliantly organized with a great atmosphere in the campsite and on the trails. and the rain held off on race day! what more could you ask for?! 😀
Top day out, finished in about 3.5hrs.
Well done to the organisers for being brave enough to include some of those nasty descents in a mass participation event, some of which had me riding like a, er, roadie. World cup descent was nuts, the yooftube vid of it on the other thread doesnt show how steep bits of it really were. Rigid would have been hell. A&E must have been busy.
I must be getting fitter, as this year I managed to beat an old bloke from Builth and I saw Nick Craig covered in mud at the arena - he's normally back home having his tea by the time I finish.
One gripe- stop the locals walking their **** dogs at the start area for a few days beforehand, eh??
Hardest UK single day event - I think the Kielder 100 would have something to say about that!
Yea, if thats harder than the Kielder 100 then I'll be a happy chap!!
Really enjoyed the Dyfi though. I was riding it with my mate (the chap on the Merlin with the smiley stickers on his backpack mentioned above) Dan who was doing his 3rd EVER mountain bike ride... thats ride... not race, or event.. he'd only ever put his leg over an mtb twice before Sunday and he gave everything a go... RESPECT!
"Dan who was doing his 3rd EVER mountain bike ride... thats ride... not race, or event.. he'd only ever put his leg over an mtb twice before Sunday and he gave everything a go... RESPECT! "
++++1
fair play to Dan.
J.
Cut off, I finished 5 o'oclock, didn't get diverted and did the full course, 38 miles plus an extra mile of climbing when my mate and I lost each other, both went back to find each other, missed each other on the way before being finally re-united!!! Muppets eh 😆 Single speed as well, really did not need the extra climbing.
Chainline, did your chainring bolts last the distance in the end?
Chainline +1 😯
A&E must have been busy.
Speaking to Fraz on Sunday night and he said they hadn't had to ambulance anyone out this year so well done everyone for being careful 😀
Chainline, only the first 200 riders did the full course or punishment loop as some call it. If you finished at 5PM you must have been one of the last riders through and wouldn't have done the punishment loop.
I guess the fella who told us the extra loop was closed at around 3pm must have moved on, just some tape across a fireroad so you wouldn't have noticed it if he hadn't been there.
Chainline, only the first 200 riders did the full course or punishment loop as some call it.
I came through the cutoff point with sofaking in 184th and 185th. The Swede came through a few minutes behind us and was one of the last riders to make it. It was punisment but worth it for the pisstaking rights over the rest of our group that didn't make it. 😛
Thanks Mole - I expect it sounded much worse from outside the tent than it really was. Perhaps you hadnt had enough to drink! Honestly, I was convinced the spirit of Jimi himself had joined us.
Frazjones - sorry about the vomit slick - It belonged to my mate Matt, not me. He said that sheep are known to be partial to 2nd-hand steak pie and carrot, so left it where it was.

awesome pics rightplace, will you do a deal on multiple images?
So was the Dyfi longer than 38miles this year if we did the 'short' loop, certainly we did not get diverted from the marked course and the GPS hasn't lied before, the final climb prior to the ace last descent felt like punishment.
I got 38.9 miles on my Garmin GPS. Thats from the gate in Mach back to the gate in Mach. Definitely did the extra loop.
Paul
Russell96, yes, great ta, won't make that mistake again!
checked the old garmin etrex vista, showed 38.7m gate to gate for the route with just under a mile of double back. We took the minor road over the bridge back to the campsite not the main road.
Irrelevant really, I had a blast, proved to my self I have some fitness at this stage since I need to work towards Kielder followed by Trans Provence 3 wks later, I don't want to think of T-P yet as it would appear it is 7 Dyfi's on the bounce.....
actually, T-P felt a bit more like 2 Dyfis a day to me last year 🙂
Cripes Gary if thats not motivation I don't know what is, at least I'll have gears!
Well, maybe over-egging it a bit but it is exactly what I was thinking to myself last September! Maybe its just 1.5 🙂
Was an awesome event, the sight of 730 bikes going through a small town was something to behold! A great and brilliantly organised day. The descents in the dyfi are just something else, steep and rocky but wide enough for lots of different line choices. Will definitely be there next year!
i had a poooo in the woods at the halfway stop , two things that worry me , ime not that old , and i thought i was alone . 🙂
loved this event first time for me!! got back to camp not long after 3pm will look to do better on the downhills next year well done to everyone who completed
