Talking about these wonky Mickey mouse head shape Magicshines:

Don't know whether the standard MS is bright enough not to consider more light, or these will get you closer to that alleged 900l?

I'll probably go with the newer Al cylinder ones:

but the thumb button, wide spill and only a little more money wise does make the Mickeys appeal. But they also appear unstable...

I just get annoyed by the overprice/over-hyped crap that they sell here in the UK & pushed at us by the bike mags as the 'only' option.
The exception to this being the 'home' builders like Trout or Luminous (spelling?), but you asked about cheaper units, you won't/can't beat the Magicshine unit for this IMO.
