Got a couple of days off next week and always wanted to have a wee look around Dunnottar Castle , So thinking of getting the train from east lothian and taking the bike. My question is if anyone knows the area , should I take my Cx , mtb or road bike. Im thinking I could get off at Montrose and head north and look for some coastal paths. Failing that take my Mtb and get off in Sonehaven and back track towards Mt keen. Any advice would be appreciated.
I can’t say that i ever thought about taking my bike to Dunnottar (but would usually have a camera in my hand which would make it awkward 🤣), always walked it. It can be quite busy (or busy enough to be awkward). Don’t recall people talking about it as a route. Hill of Swanley and ‘Wetteresso’ is where I headed when down there.
If you were thinking of Mount Keen, there’s also the Firmounth/Fungle/Firmounth loop from Tarfside.
Thanks Metalheart , I think Ill throw the cx bike on the train and get off at Carnoustie and ride to Stonehaven . Really just going to take pics. Do you know if the waterfall is visible from outside the castle grounds. ?
Donnottar castle is great - such a brooding and atmosphereric place. I'm surprised it's not been used more in film.
There's only a rideable coastal path in small sections, in others there's the barest scrape of an overgrown path next to 100ft cliffs, wouldn't advise those bits. Not sure I've ever noticed a waterfall at Dunnotar? If you like fish and chips worth visiting here: https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2018/aug/19/stonehaven-bay-best-fish-and-chips-food-award
