I’ve finally picked up some bib trousers / MTB dungarees to see what all the fuss is about, in the hope it gets me out more this winter.

a question - what do you wear under / over them?

I’ve seen jackets worn over and under? I’ve also seen people wear them with just a t-shirt?

thanks

I’m no Jean Paul Gaultiezlsl but I’d be putting warm stuff under, waterproof over.

I've not seen anyone wearing MTB dungarees in real life. I've mostly given up on trail centers so don't see huge numbers of people hopping about getting kitted up.

Either that means you are going to be the absolute trend setter and can wear them however you like

Or

People have jackets on over the top.

I think I'd have a jacket on top so when the water and mud hits it, it runs over the jacket, then the trousers instead of jacket under dungarees so the water and mud runs over the jacket and into the crotch.

I'm a total sugar cube ( dissolve in water). I'd love to hear real world review of how they actually work. I wear braces to stop jacket/ trousers gaps when it's minging. Integrated braces sound good.

Base layer underneath, jersey or jacket over the top.

I find squashing extra layers underneath is uncomfortable and doesn't allow the insulation to trap warmth.

I have a pair of fox defend fire bib pants, not waterproof but nice and warm and no jacket/trouser gap.

My daughter rides in Aldi dungarees, jersey/jacket underneath so the dungarees do the job of stopping the spray and mud etc. I guess it depends how much room you've got!

It seemed so practical that I got some of the Madison ones, not tried them out yet though

Here she is modelling the look for you

Can't help but think of Dexys Midnight Runners.

Looking good here!

Going out in mine shortly, will be wearing snickers long John's underneath. Currently 10° but I'll be ebiking.

Not sure on top half yet

The only reason you would wear a jacket underneath, would be to show everyone you're wearing dungarees, but your gonna have wet legs if it rains.

Dungarees with top/base layer underneath makes sense, as they give better coverage for sprays from the ground.

Surely if you're wearing a jacket or waterproof, you'd want that over the top. Otherwise, water is just going to run down the jacet and into your trousers.

Make sure that your vest doesn't ride up if you can't tuck it in your inner shorts. Been using this sort of thing for decades when climbing and the vest needs to stay in place.

On the whole the idea is brilliant. What I want is something a touch looser than a bib tight with a decent water repellant coating.

Wore them today with the aforementioned Snickers long John's (sealskins socks, kneepads and Trailcross GTX down below). Endura long sleeved base layer up top with a Fox tee and Fox windproof gilet. Was perfect for the conditions. A cool 10°, pleasant conditions though, but plenty of mud and puddles.

Kept my lower half (and ass) clean and dry, no cold back from clothing creepage and not too hot on the top half. Ebike ride, but will try on a normal ride soon. Decent halfway house between full waterproofs, thumbs up from me

The kneepad bulge was nothing like how it looks on this pic btw

I am very intrigued by some, I would do that if the ground is wet but its not raining then layers underneath but if coming from the sky too, then jacket over the top.
