probably a stupid question but I can’t find an answer to it online... are Shimano disc brake calipers front or rear specific / can they be used at either end providing that they hose is connected to the correct lever?

I'd be of the opinion that they can be used either end and connected to either lever.

The calipers are the same, but you need the right adapters to attach them to your forks and frame. And you mat need different sorts of adapters for front and rear, depends on what sort of mounts, and what size rotors.

Same but the rotor required at the front will be 20mm bigger than the rear, that's what Craig's on about with the adapters, choose them to suit your rotor size.
